SAN MARCOS, Texas – The UT Arlington volleyball team defeated the seventh-seeded App State Mountaineers 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17) in the Sun Belt Tournament Thursday night inside Strahan Arena on the campus of Texas State.
Brooke Townsend led the Maverick attack with 16 kills on the night while hitting .414.
Bre Walp (14 kills),
Madison Hill (12 kills) and
Kylie Jedlicka (11 kills) each finished with double-digit kills. Jedlicka was one of two Mavs to finish with a double-double, finishing with 11 digs on the night.
Kylee Kapp finished with 15 assists and 12 kills to join Jedlicka with a double-double.
Jessica Stancliff paced the match with 31 assists.
The Mavs hit .319 as a team, putting away 61 kills on the night. On defense, UTA finished with 56 digs and five blocks, with Walp finished with a team-high three.
The Mavs and Mountaineers traded points through until UTA went on a 7-2 run to take a 17-12 lead. UTA took advantage of five App State errors along the way to get the advantage. The Mountaineers rattled off six straight to take an 18-17 lead. With the set tied at 21, the Mavs used back-to-back points to go up 23-21 and force an App State timeout. The two-point lead was all UTA needed as the Mavs won the set 25-23.
Trailing 10-7 in the second set, the Mavericks went on a 6-3 run to tie the set at 13. The run was capped with a St. Germain ace. After the Mountaineers took a 20-16 lead as part of a 3-0 run, the Mavericks responded with one of their own to make it 20-19 and force a Mountaineer timeout. Despite tying the set at 21, the Mavs fell 25-22 following a 4-0 run to end the set by App State.
With set three tied at seven, the Mavs used a 4-1 run to take an 11-8 lead over the Mountaineers. Leading 24-17, the Mavericks held off a late 4-0 run by App State to hold on to win the set 25-21 and take a 2-1 set advantage.
The Mavs gained the momentum back to start the fourth set, beginning the set on an 10-2 run. UTA never let up, refusing to allow the Mountaineers to get back into the set, going on to win 25-17 and taking the match 3-1.

With the win, the Mavs advance to take on #3 South Alabama in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament tomorrow at 7:30 pm in Strahan Arena.
