ARLINGTON – Senior Marie Benson recorded her second double-double of the season as the UTA women's basketball team fell to Texas Southern, 74-63, on Monday night at College Park Center.

With the loss, UTA falls to 6-6 on the year, while the Tigers improve to 5-6 on the season.

Benson shot 11-of-25 from the field and 6-of-14 from the charity stripe to finish with her team-high 28 points. The Waco native also pulled down 10 boards and recorded a pair of steals on the night. Claire Chastain chipped in with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Terryn Milton added eight points and three rebounds. Barbara Benson made her UTA debut and finished with four points, three boards and two assists in 9 minutes of action.

TSU shot 48 percent (24-of-50) on the evening, while UTA knocked down 24-of-60 (40 percent) shots from the floor. Both squads struggled handling the ball, committing 20+ turnovers each.

After a fast-paced opening half, TSU held a 37-34 halftime lead, thanks to Ciani Cryor and Ataiya Bridges combining for 21 of the team's 37 points. The Tigers shot 51.9 percent in the opening half and forced UTA into 14 first half turnovers.

The third quarter was a rough one for the Lady Mavs as an 8-1 TSU run gave the visitors a 45-35 lead with 5:34 left in the period. UTA would chip away at the deficit and close the gap to 48-42 with 46 seconds remaining, thanks to a M. Benson layup, but TSU responded with a basket with 23 seconds left to take a 50-42 lead at the end of three. The Lady Mavs shot just 18.2% (2-of-11) from the field and committed 7 turnovers in the 3rd quarter.

UTA used a 6-2 run, capped by a Misty Dossey layup, to cut the Texas Southern lead down to four points (52-48) with 8:42 left to play. The Lady Mavs wouldn't get any closer as the Tigers outscored UTA 22-15 over the final eight minutes to secure the 73-64 non-conference victory.

The Lady Mavs will be back in action at College Park Center on Thursday, Jan. 2, when they open Sun Belt Conference play with a matchup against Arkansas State (3-8). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
