HUMBLE, Texas – Behind one of its lowest rounds of the year and consistent play up and down its lineup on Sunday, the UT Arlington men's golf team sits in a tie for 10th place after the opening round of the All-American Intercollegiate at the Golf Club of Houston.
Â
Facing one of the strongest fields it has all year, UTA posted a 295 total – tied for its 3rd-lowest of the season – and despite sitting in a tie for 10th, the Mavericks are only 12 shots out of 1st place as the 14-team field is separated by just 20 strokes.
Â
The Mavericks had no standout performances in the first of three rounds on the par-72, 7096-yard layout which has played host to the PGA Tour's Houston Open since 2003, but instead UTA received a 73 from
Caleb Hicks, 74s each from
Paul Gonzalez,
Tanner Gore and
Kyle Cox and a 75 from
Camilo Avila.
Â
Every player in the lineup recorded at least two birdies on the day, led by a quartet from Hicks, who was 3-under with three holes to play, but unfortunately finished bogey-bogey-double bogey. Gonzalez experienced a similar ending as he also was 3-under coming off a birdie on the driveable par-4 12th, but played his final six holes in 5-over.
Â
Sam Houston State leads the tournament following a 283 opening round – one shot clear of Baylor (284) and three ahead of Houston (286), which is co-hosting the event with Rice.
Â
All 14 schools in the field are ranked inside the top 155 of the nation; six of those reside in the top 100 and three are in the top 50.
Â
Second-round action is scheduled to get underway on Monday for the Mavs, beginning with tee times off the 10th hole at 8 a.m. Avila will be first off, followed by Cox at 8:09, Gore at 8:18, Gonzalez at 8:27 and Hicks at 8:36. Live scoring will be available all tournament long via
