Three Lady Mavericks scored in double figures, led by career-highs from
Claire Chastain and
Aysia Evans, as the UTA women's basketball team defeated in-state rival Texas State, 68-53, and extended their winning streak to four games on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 2) at the College Park Center.
The Lady Mavs shot 51.2 percent (22-of-43) from the floor, 50 percent (4-of-8) from long distance and knocked down 20-of-34 shots (58.8 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Bobcats were bothered by the UTA defense and forced into a ton of turnovers (21) and tough shots all afternoon. Texas State was limited to just 16-of-51 (31.4 percent) shooting from the field and 2-of-14 (14.3 percent) from behind the arc. The Lady Mavs turned defense into offense all game, scoring 16 points off of Texas State's 21 turnovers.
Chastain finished with a career-high and game-high 21 points in 26 minutes. The freshman shot 7-of-8 from the floor, 2-of-2 from three-point range and 5-of-9 from the free-throw line. Evans played 19 minutes and recorded a career-high 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, 1-of-1 from long distance and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. She also added two boards, a block and a game-high four steals, which tied her career-high.
Cierra Johnson chipped in with 11 points, six boards and four assists. C. Johnson, who came into the contest one-point shy of 11th place, moved past Meghan Nelson and Kim (Cann) Pruitt and into the top 10 in scoring in UTA history (10th place; 1,205 points).
UTA jumped out to a 13-2 lead to start the game and held Texas St. to just six first-quarter points, tying a season-best for the Lady Mavericks. The Bobcats shot 20 percent from the field in the opening quarter. UTA would never look back after jumping out to the huge first quarter lead and went on to secure another SBC victory.
The Lady Mavs held Texas State's leading scorer, Toshua Leavitt scoreless until she knocked down a couple of free throws halfway through the third quarter. Leavitt finished the game with 10 points on 3-of-11 shooting.
