ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington men's and women's tennis teams return to action this weekend at the UTA Tennis Center with a trio of matches – one for the men and two for the women.
Action gets underway on Friday at 2 p.m. with the women welcoming Western Kentucky. On Saturday the men take on Wichita State at 2 p.m., and the weekend concludes with the women facing the Shockers on Sunday at 10 a.m. All UTA tennis matches are free to the public.
The women are coming off a sweep of UTEP and McNeese State last weekend at the UTA Tennis Center, 6-1 and 4-3, respectively, while the men put up a quality fight against #16 TCU before falling, 5-2.
The Maverick women have started the spring season 4-0 and are in the midst of a nine-match homestand to commence the season. Helping lead the Mavs to that great start is sophomore
Almudena Boza, who on Wednesday was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week after going a perfect 3-0 in combined singles and doubles action last weekend. She has a team-leading 13 wins as part of a 13-3 overall record, is 4-0 in dual matches and has won four in a row.
The men – who have already faced two nationally-ranked top-20 opponents this spring – will look to get back to .500 when the Shockers visit on Saturday. The men are in the midst of an eight-match homestand, and are led by
Enrique Pardo's 10-5 singles record, including a team-best 4-1 performance in dual action. Pardo has won four matches in a row.
Following action this weekend, both teams will continue their homestands when the women welcome Dallas Baptist, Cameron (both Thursday, Feb. 14) and UTRGV (Sunday, Feb. 17) next weekend, while the men turn around and also take on Dallas Baptist and Cameron on Feb. 14.
