Mavs Sweep South Alabama To Start Conference

ARLINGTON, Texas - Whitney Walton had another great game as she reached base and scored after every at-bat on the way to an 8-1 win for the Mavericks against Southern Alabama Sunday at Allen Saxe Field. The win earned the Mavericks a clean sweep over the Jaguars, marking the first opening weekend sweep for UT Arlington since joining the Sun Belt Conference.

The Mavericks (13-10, 3-0 SBC) put the pressure on early as their first four batters reached base in the bottom of the first inning, with first-baseman, Aileen Garcia drawing a bases-loaded walk to score Walton. Two batters later, right-fielder, Bri Burchianti singled to center, bringing two more runners home.

Mavericks' head coach, Peejay Brun said they're fine manufacturing their runs and not scoring off of home runs.

"We don't hit as many home runs as other teams, but that's fine with us," Brun said. "We like to run so it's a little more fun when we get to hit base hits and run around the bases."

UTA kept their foot on the gas as they continued scoring in the second inning with a single to left field by center-fielder, Laura Curry bringing home Walton.

Walton would score later in the fourth on a double by left-fielder, Krista Rude, and again in the sixth when Curry reached base on an error by Southern Alabama second-baseman, Savanna Mayo.

Walton finished the game two-for-three with a walk, two stolen bases and four runs scored.

Mavericks' catcher, Reagan Wright hit a solo homerun to left field in the fifth to make it 6-1. The home run marked her third of the season.

JoJo Valencia started in the circle, pitching three innings, while allowing just one run.  Pitcher, Randi Phillips (6-5) got the win as she threw four scoreless innings of relief, giving up just three hits and no walks.
