ARLINGTON, Texas – A big inning was enough for Georgia Southern to even its conference-opening series with the UT Arlington baseball team Saturday, as the Eagles beat the Mavs 5-3.
As they did in the first game of the series Friday, the Mavs (12-7, 1-1 SBC) scored in the first inning to take the lead.
Andrew Miller singled to right field to bring
Connor Aube home in the bottom of the first frame.
Some heads up baserunning moved Miller over to third base before
Anthony Dominguez grounded into a fielder's choice to score Miller.
Georgia Southern starting pitcher Braden Hays hit
Josh Minjarez to put the leadoff batter on first. The next two UTA hitters moved Minjarez around the diamond until a
Boone Montgomery sac fly brought Minjarez home to push the Mavs' lead to 3-0.
Georgia Southern (8-9, 1-1) used five hits to score all five of its runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Cesar Gomez came into the game in relief of starter
Ka'ikepono Anderson in the middle of the rally. He struck out three over 3.2 innings of work.
UTA will try to win the series in the rubber match Sunday at noon.
