SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UTA baseball team picked up its third straight victory on Saturday, defeating UIW, 7-3, in the second game of a three-game set at Sullivan Field.
With the win, the Mavericks improve to 8-4 overall, while Incarnate Word falls to 7-4 on the season.
Michael Wong moved to 3-0 on the year after pitching 3.0 innings and giving up one earned run.
The Mavs got on the board first in the top of the third inning.
Connor Aube had a sacrifice fly to center field that scored
Dylan Paul (1-0), but the Cardinals quickly responded in the bottom of the frame. UIW scored their first run off of a sacrifice fly and then a solo shot from Ryan Flores gave UIW the 2-1 lead.
UTA tied the game in the top of the fifth when Paul doubled to score
Zac Cook (2-2). The Mavericks blew the game open in the sixth, scoring three runs in the frame. Cook got things started with a bunt single that scored
Will Olson. Paul followed with a single to right field to bring Cook home and
Boone Montgomery singled through the left side to plate
Josh Minjarez.
The Cardinals scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut into the UTA lead, but the Mavs extended their lead in the seventh on a sac fly from
Andrew Miller (6-3) and in the eighth when Minjarez hit his team-leading fourth homer (7-3) to secure the win.
The Mavs will look for the series sweep when they return to the field on Sunday, March 3 for game No. 3 of the three-game set with Incarnate Word. First pitch on Sunday afternoon is set for 1 p.m.
