PEARLAND, Texas – A busy month of April for the UT Arlington men's golf team continues this coming Monday and Tuesday, Apr. 15-16, at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic from Golfcrest Country Club as the Mavericks will wrap up their regular season with a third tournament in as many weeks.
 
Hosted by Houston, Rice and Sam Houston State, action is set to commence on Monday with 36 continuous holes before concluding on Tuesday morning with the final round. The following five-player lineup will be teeing it up for the Mavs on the par-72, 7,254-yard layout:

INSIDE THE LINEUP
Sophomore Gonzalez (73.29), freshman Cox (74.48) and senior Gore (74.52) lead UTA in scoring average, and the trio is responsible for 26 of the Mavs' 34 par-or-better rounds on the year. Gore has a team-leading 11 of those performances, including a team-best five rounds in the 60s. Gonzalez has eight par-or-better rounds, while Cox has seven. Senior Avila carries a 74.85 stroke average over 13 rounds, while freshman Hicks sits at 75.60.
 
Gonzalez has posted consecutive tournaments of 54-hole scores at, or below, par, beginning with a 3-under 210 at Seattle's Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay and continuing last week at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic with an even-par 216.
 
Prior to a final-round 78 last Tuesday at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, Gore had posted seven-straight rounds of even par or better, including six of those which were below par.
  
Avila has ramped up his game this spring as the senior has saved his best collegiate golf for his last semester. He posted the two lowest rounds of his career – a 3-under 69 and a 2-under 70 – in the final two rounds last week, and prior to that had established a then-career-low even-par 71 in the final round of the Redhawk Invitational.
 
Hicks also posted a season- and career-low round with a 4-under 68 in the 2nd round at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic last Monday, and followed it up with a 1-under 71 to finish with a personal-best 2-under 214 total.
 
Cox has had his score used in the team total in 22 of 25 rounds this year, but two of those came in the 1st and 2nd rounds last week as he looks to bounce back from a still-respectable, but uncharacteristic, 10-over 226 showing.
 
GOING LOW IN THE SPRING
After posting team scores over par in the first 18 rounds of the season, the Mavs have turned things around dramatically since the 2nd round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Feb. 23. During that 2nd round, UTA shot a then-season-low 2-over 290.
 
However, the Mavs then fired their first sub-par round of the year in the final round with a 2-under 286, starting a stretch of five of their last seven rounds being under par. Included in that run are two rounds double-figure under par. Over their last seven rounds, UTA is a combined 20-under par. Through its first 17 rounds this year, UTA was a combined 252-over par.
 
Each of UTA's nine-lowest rounds this year have come this spring, with the exception of one (a 293 1st-round at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic).
