CHANDLER, Ariz. – A busy April for the UT Arlington men's golf team continues Monday and Tuesday, Apr. 8-9, at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic from Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse as the Mavericks look to continue building momentum into the Sun Belt Conference Championship later this month.
The three-round event commences with 36 continuous holes on Monday off a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Central (7:30 a.m. local MT). The final round is scheduled for Tuesday with another 8:30 a.m. Central shotgun start (7:30 a.m. local).
UTA is coming off its 3rd-best 54-hole total score in the nearly 60-year history of the program last week at Seattle's Redhawk Invitational at famed Chambers Bay Golf Club, and will look to remain hot against another strong field outside of Phoenix.
The Mavericks will be facing four top-100 ranked teams and several more which reside just outside the top-100 in the Golfstat rankings, including UTA. The complete 20-team field is included at the end of this release.

The following five-player lineup will be teeing it up for the Mavs, in addition to an individual, on the Cattail Course at Whirlwind, which will play as a par-72, 7,218-yard layout:
1) Kyle Cox
2) Paul Gonzalez
3) Tanner Gore
4) Caleb Hicks
5) Camilo Avila
I) Jacob Massengale
INSIDE THE LINEUP
Sophomore Gonzalez (73.48), freshman Cox (74.36) and senior Gore (74.77) lead UTA in scoring average, and the trio is responsible for 22 of the Mavs' 26 par-or-better rounds on the year. Gore – coming off a near record-setting round and tournament last week – has a team-leading nine of those performances, including a team-best four rounds in the 60s, while Gonzalez has two rounds in the 60s and Cox possesses the team's other such performance.
Freshman Hicks carries a 76.18 stroke average over 22 rounds, while senior Avila sits at 76 exactly over 10 rounds; he has only played in four tournaments this year, but has been in the UTA lineup in all three of the Mavericks' spring events. Both Hicks and Avila are responsible for the team's other four par-or-better rounds on the season as each has two.
Massengale will be making just his second appearance of the year – and first as an individual – with the other coming at New Mexico's William H. Tucker.
NEAR-RECORD WEEK @ CHAMBERS BAY
Gore shot a career-low 65 in Tuesday's final round to tie for the 4th-best round in the program history; meanwhile, UTA posted an 841 (-11) three-round total for the tournament – representing the 3rd-best score in program history.
The 6-under round for Gore was part of a 202 (-11) three-round total to tie for 2nd place in the field of 102, finishing just two strokes behind medalist Hidetoshi Yoshihara from UCLA.
That 202 total – which included an opening-round 70 and second-round 67 – is the 2nd-lowest 54-hole score in program history, bested only by a 201 recorded by Zack Reeves at the 2007 Turtle Bay Intercollegiate in Hawai'i.
Gore helped UTA orchestrate one of its greatest overall scoring performances in program history as the Mavericks posted a final-round 282 (-2) to conclude the tournament in 5th place with the 841. Only an 823 posted by the Mavs in the aforementioned 2007 Turtle Bay Intercollegiate and an 835 secured a week earlier in that same season at Oral Roberts' Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate were better performances than what UTA put forth in the Pacific Northwest last week.
UTA shot a 10-under 274 2nd round – the 4th-best round in program history (record: 270) –the best 2nd round in program history and the lowest 18-hole score since the 2007-08 campaign. The Mavs' opened Monday with a then-season-low 285 in the first round; the 559 (-9) 36-hole total was the 3rd-best in program history behind only a 551 and a 557 set in the aforementioned 2007-08 season.
NEXT UP
After taking the month of March off from competitive action, the Mavs are in the second week of four-straight tournaments which will culminate at the Sun Belt Championship Apr. 21-24. Next up, UTA heads to the Bayou City Collegiate Classic in Pearland, Texas, Apr. 15-16.
