CONWAY, S.C. – The UTA baseball team ran into a red-hot ULM squad and fell 18-5 (7 inn.) on Thursday night at the 2019 Sun Belt Baseball Championship at Springs Brooks Stadium.
With the loss, the No. 4 Mavs fall to the losers bracket and will face the No. 5 Chants of Coastal Carolina on Friday night (May 24). First pitch for the contest is set for 5:30 p.m. CT.
Josh Minjarez led the Mavs at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Anthony Dominguez went 1-for-4 with a homer.
ULM got on the board first, scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the opening frame.
The Mavs quickly responded with a trio of runs in the top of the second inning.
Dylan Paul singled to center field, scoring
Andrew Miller for the first run (3-1).
Boone Montgomery then stepped in the box and hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring
Will Olson home (3-2). The third run of the frame came off of a fielder's choice, which allowed Minjarez to score (3-3).
The Warhawks continued to pour it on, scoring total seven runs in the 2nd-5th innings to grab a 10-3 advantage.
Dominguez stepped into the box in the top of the sixth and launched a solo homer, his seventh of the season, to right field to cut the ULM lead down to six (10-4).
ULM posted eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to blow the game wide open (18-4).
UTA added a run in the seventh when a throwing error by the Warhawks allowed
Tyler Rice to score (18-5).
