LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Briana Brown registered a career-high and match-high 26 kills to lead the UT Arlington volleyball team to a hard-ought 5-set victory (20-25, 25-21, 27-29, 25-23, 15-11) over Little Rock on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Mavs remain undefeated and move to 3-0 (3-0 SBC) on the season, while the Trojans fall to 1-8 overall and 1-7 in league play. The Mavericks start SBC conference play 3-0 for just the third time in program history (2013, 2016) and the first time under head coach
J.T. Wenger.
"This was a great team effort over the course of the weekend," said Wenger. "Numerous of our student-athletes turned in great performances as we remained focused over 12 sets of volleyball. This was a solid start to the 2020 season, yet we are eager to grow as a program over the next six weeks leading up to the conference tournament."
Brown hit .431 to go with her 26 kills.
Brooke Townsend recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 kills and 19 digs.
Kylee Kapp recorded a double-double with a career-high 32 assists and 10 digs, while
Mollie Blank turned in the first double-double of her collegiate career with a career-high 30 assists to go with a career-high 13 digs.
Simara Peyton, in her first collegiate action, finished with 10 kills and six blocks, while
Alli Wells tallied a match-high 29 digs.
Laura Jansen led UALR with 25 kills and 17 digs. Alyssa Nayar and Nathalia Vigineski recorded 38 and 30 assists, respectively.
The match was closely contested all afternoon and featured 32 ties and 14 lead changes.
UTA will be back in action next weekend (Oct. 16-17) when they welcome Arkansas State to College Park Center for a 3-match set. First serve for the home opener on Friday, Oct. 16 is set for 11 a.m., followed by match two at 6 p.m. The series finale will be Saturday, Oct. 17 (1 p.m.).
