SOUTH PADRE ISLAND/EDINBURG – It took two days to complete the game, but the UT Arlington women's basketball team fell to UNT, 74-56, on the campus of UTRGV Saturday as part of the revised South Padre Island Classic that began Friday on South Padre Island at the South Padre Convention Centre.
The matchup between the Mean Green (3-1) and the Lady Mavericks (2-2) was the first of four scheduled games at the South Padre Island Classic hosted by UTRGV. UTA and UNT began their game on Friday, but the contest was postponed due to unsafe court conditions prior to the start of the second quarter with the Mean Green leading, 18-13.
The squads changed venues and cities and headed to the UTRGV's campus in Edinburg to play at the UTRGV Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
Camryn Hawkins finished with a career-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe. She also added a pair of rebounds and a steal.
Katie Ferrell chipped in with 14 points, three assists, two steals and two boards.
Shyia Smith registered 10 points and six rebounds, while
Misty Dossey scored six points, pulled down four rebounds and dished out three assists.
Emma Halverson tallied a team-high eight rebounds, while
Bre Wickware and
Jordynn Hernandez each recorded a team-high four dimes on the afternoon.
UNT's Quincy Noble finished with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds. Madison Townley scored 17 points to go with seven boards.
The Lady Mavs will now turn their attention to Sun Belt Conference play. UTA will open league play with a pair of games against Little Rock at College Park Center (Jan. 1-2). UTA and Little Rock open 2021 with a 1:00 p.m. matchup on New Year's Day, followed by a 4:00 p.m. contest on Jan. 2.
