ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington baseball team opened up their 2020 season by shutting out the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders 7-0 at Clay Gould Ballpark. It marks their first season opening shutout since 2008.
Carlos Tavera (1-0) picked up the win, tossing 5.0 innings in his first game back at UTA. The junior put down six batters, while allowing just one hit and three walks.Â
Wyatt Divis entered in the sixth, allowing just three hits over the final 4.0 innings to pick up the save.
Zac Cook and
Andrew Miller both came away with home runs in the game. Cook connected on a solo shot, while Miller hit a grand slam. Miller also came a triple away from hitting for the cycle, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate with five runs.
After a 1-2-3 inning to begin the game, the Mavericks got straight to business in the bottom of the first with a solo shot from Cook to take an immediate 1-0 lead.
The scoring took a halt until the bottom of the third. Matt Cavanagh began the inning with a single to center field before Cook and
Anthony Dominguez loaded the bases with walks. Miller quickly cleared the bases with a blast over the left field wall to put the Mavs up 5-0.
Connor Aube led off the fourth with a double down the right field line before scoring two batters later on a wild pitch.
The scoring finished in the fifth inning with an RBI double from Miller, pushing Dominguez from first to home.
The Mavericks will be back in action at Clay Gould Ballpark tomorrow at 2 p.m. for the second game of the series against the Islanders.
