ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington baseball team rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to win the third game of the weekend series against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 3-1. With the win, the Mavericks swept the Islanders and completed their first season-opening series sweep since 2013 when they swept Louisiana Tech.
"Very proud of the guys for only giving up two runs this weekend," said Head Coach
Darin Thomas. "Today was tough, but I liked the way our guys came off the bench."
David Moffat got the start on the mound for the Mavericks, lasting 5.0 innings while giving up one run on four hits.
Logan Austin,
Cade Winquest and Cesar Comez combined to pitch the final four innings. Winquest (1-0) picked up the win, tossing 2.0 innings and striking out the same number of batters. Gomez picked up his second save in as many days, pitching the final inning of the day without allowing a hit.
Josh Minjarez led the Mavs with two hits. Phillips Childs knocked in the game-tying run with a single, while
Zac Cook put the Mavs on top for the first time in the next at-bat.
Anthony Dominguez added to the runs an RBI of his own. The Mavericks had plenty of baserunners on the day, leaving ten runners on, while the Islanders left nine.
The game sat at a scoreless tie until the third inning. The Islanders led off with a walk and an error by the Mavericks on the next play put runners on second and third. Corpus took advantage of the miscue with an RBI single with the next at bat.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Mavericks put it all together. A two-strike sacrifice bunt by
Tyler Rice put runners at second and third for UTA.
"Getting that bunt down with two strikes is hard to do," said Thomas. "We had some big pinch hits come through we needed them to."
Childs pinch hit for
Sam Gotlieb and sent the ball through the right side of the infield to push the game-tying run home. With the next at bat, Cook singled with a hard ground ball up the middle of the infield to give the Mavericks the lead. Following a fly out, Dominguez stepped into the box and knocked in Cook to push the score to 3-1.
The Mavericks will travel to Dallas Baptist on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. game against the Patriots.
