ARLINGTON, Texas - A week after narrowly falling to #18 Dallas Baptist in Dallas, the UT Arlington baseball team enacted their revenge, defeating the Patriots 6-3 at Clay Gould Ballpark on Tuesday night behind 18 strikeouts from their pitching staff.
"[DBU] is a quality opponent and after losing to them last week we had something to play for," said head coach
Darin Thomas. "We have a good club and we believe in ourselves."
The Mavericks threw five pitchers in the game with
Cade Winquest picking up his first start of the year. Winquest struck out five batters over the first two innings before
Wyatt Divis (W, 1-0) replaced him in the third. Over the next 4.0 innings, Divis struck out six batters and allowed just one walk.Â
Tanner King,
Michael Wong and
Cesar Gomez (S, 3) each pitched 1.0 inning to round out the game. King and Gomez each struck out three batters, while Wong rung up one.
The Mavericks finished with nine hits on the day, led by Philllip Childs's and
Zac Cook's multi-hit performances. Childs also hit a two-run home run - his first of the season - which game the Mavericks their first lead.Â
Josh Minjarez hit a home run in a second consecutive game to push his yearly total to three.
DBU struck first in the first inning. Austin Bell singled with the second at-bat before being driven home with a double by Jeffrey David. The Patriots got greedy and tried to score another run on the play, but
Connor Aube had other plans throwing out the runner at home from his center field postilion.
UTA immediately struck back in the bottom frame. Aube, Cook and
Anthony Dominguez each reached base to begin the game, with Dominguez' single through the left side of the infield scoring Aube to tie the game at one.
The scoring halted until the bottom of the fourth. After
Andrew Miller walked to start the inning, Childs unloaded on a ball to left field to give the Mavericks the lead and begin an offensive attack. With the next pitch, Minjarez hit a solo home run to extend the Maverick lead to three runs.Â
Cole Solomon and Cook each came away with an RBI with ground balls to make the score 6-1.
In the top of the 8th, the Patriots found a groove. Bell walked to begin the frame before being driven in by Jimmy Glowenke with an RBI double the next at-bat. Back-to-back singles scored a second run and put runners at the corners. Wong entered the game with the game-tying run at the plate and promptly finished the inning with a double play picked up by Minjarez and a strikeout.
Gomez came in the following inning and struck out the side 10 pitches to secure the win.
The Mavericks will take on the Utah Utes for a three-game series at Clay Gould Ballpark this Friday through Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 28).
