@UTAMavsBSB Shut Out Utah To Open Series

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington baseball team (7-2) defeated the Utah Utes (3-5) in shutout fashion on Friday evening, winning 6-0 at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Carlos Tavera (2-1) picked up his third start on the season, tossing five shutout innings with six strikeouts and three hits.  Michael Wong came in as a middle reliever, allowing one hit over three innings.  Logan Austin threw the final inning, striking out one Ute and allowing one hit.

The Mavericks finished with eight hits on the day, led by Andrew Miller's two-for-four day at the plate.  Miller hit his third home run of the season.  Josh Minjarez and Phillip Childs each added an RBI of their own.

The scoring got started in the bottom of the first with a two-out solo home run to left field by Miller to put the Mavs up 1-0.

The Utes had chances to get on base, loading the bases in the top of the third.  Tavera would force a fly out and strike out the final Ute of the inning to escape without any runs given up and keep the Maverick lead.

It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth that UTA put more runs on the board.  Zac Cook walked to start the inning.  Following two straight outs, Minjarez and Childs came away with back-to-back hits to put two more runs on the board and increase the lead to three.

The following inning, the Mavericks took advantage of mistakes by Utah.  With the bases loaded, a passed ball allowed Justin Marino to advance home.  Trying to get Marino out, the catcher threw an errant ball to home plate, sailing over the pitchers head as the two other Maverick baserunners advanced home to double the UTA lead, 6-0.

The Mavericks will look to push their winning streak to four games with a 2 pm game against Utah tomorrow (Feb. 29) at Clay Gould Ballpark.
