ARLINGTON – Four players scored in double-figures, including three with 20+ points, as the UTA women's basketball team honored its two seniors in pregame ceremony and proceeded to score 100 points for the first time this season in a 101-73 win over Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon at College Park Center.
With the win, the Lady Mavs improve to 18-10 on the season and 12-4 in conference, while the Eagles fall to 9-19 overall and 6-11 in league play. The win also secured the No. 3 seed for UTA in the 2020 Sun Belt Championship. UTA will host two 1st round games and also the Quarterfinals, with the winner of the Quarterfinal matchup advancing to play in the Semifinals at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
Below is a detailed outline of UTA's seeding breakdown:
UTA No. 3 Seed (Site Host)
- Host 1st-round game vs. No. 10 on Tuesday, Mar. 10, at 6:00 p.m.
- Host a No. 6 vs. No. 7 neutral-site 1st-round matchup on Tuesday, Mar. 10, at 8:20 p.m.
- Host a Quarterfinal round game on Wednesday, Mar. 11, at 7:00 p.m.
Claire Chastain led the Lady Mavs with a team-high 22 points, which tied her career-high. The sophomore shot 9-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-5 from long distance. She also added three rebounds and a pair of assists in just 23 minutes of play. Senior
Marie Benson added 20 points and three boards, while senior
Aysia Evans knocked down 4-of-8 shots from behind the arc and finished with 20 points.
Katie Mayhue knocked down 4-of-6 shots from the field, including a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range, and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe to finish with 14 points off the bench.
The Lady Mavericks shot 53.6 percent (37-of-69) from the floor and 50.0 percent (14-of-28) from three point range and registered 33 assists on their 37 made baskets. The 33 assists and the 14 triples are both program records. UTA's 33 assists is also one of the top 10 single-game assist performances in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season.
UTA outrebounded the visitors 40-35 and forced Georgia Southern into 19 turnovers.
The Eagles started off quickly as Alexis Brown scored eight points in the first five minutes, giving Georgia Southern a 13-8 lead at the first media time out. UTA caught fire and made five straight three-pointers to turn a five-point deficit into a four-point (22-18) lead at the end of the first period.
The Lady Mavericks continued to shoot well from beyond the arc in the second quarter and UTA scored 32 points in the period to take a 54-30 lead at the intermission.
UTA shot 54.8 percent (17-of-31) in the second half and eclipsed the 100-point mark for just the seventh time in school history and the first time since scoring 100 vs. Arkansas State last season (Jan. 19, 2019). UTA's 101 points ranks tied-4th in program history.
The Lady Mavericks will be back in action next week when they travel to the Bayou state for a pair of games to close out the Sun Belt regular season. UTA will face Louisiana (March 5) and ULM (March 7) during the road trip.
