@UTAMavsWBB Picks Up Road Win At Louisiana, Gerlich Ties Program Record For Wins

LAFAYETTE, La. – Three players scored in double-figures as the UTA women's basketball team extended its winning-streak to six games with a 73-66 win over Louisiana on Thursday night at Earl K. Long Gymnasium.

With the win, the Lady Mavs improve to 19-10 on the season and 13-4 in conference, while the Ragin' Cajuns fall to 16-12 overall and 9-8 in league play. UTA's win snapped a 9-game winning streak in E.K. Long for the Cajuns. Thursday night gave Louisiana its first loss in the historic venue since Jan. 30, 2013.

UT Arlington's win also gives head coach Krista Gerlich her 119th win as the leader of the Lady Maverick program. Her 119 wins ties Donna Capps (2000-2007; 119-89) for the most wins in program history. A win on Saturday will make Coach Gerlich the program's all-time winningest coach and will give the Lady Mavs their 11th 20+ win season and the 3rd with Gerlich at the helm.

Marie Benson led the Lady Mavs with a game-high 21 points. The senior from Waco shot 8-of-13 from the field and 3-of-9 from the charity stripe. She also added five boards and three steals. Aysia Evans chipped in with 17 points and four rebounds, while Claire Chastain finished with 12 points and five boards. Katie Ferrell snagged eight rebounds, while Terryn Milton registered nine points and seven assists. Misty Dossey added eight points and four rebounds in 15 minutes of action off the bench.

The Lady Mavericks shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the floor and registered 13 assists on their 27 made baskets. UTA also outrebounded the Ragin' Cajuns 36-25 and forced Louisiana into 16 turnovers.

Louisiana shot the ball well in the first half, shooting 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from the floor and 75 percent (6-for-8) from long range, but UTA responded and outscored the Ragin' Cajuns 39-29 and held the home team to just a 35.7 percent shooting percentage in the final two quarters.

The home team opened the game on a 7-2 run, but it the Lady Mavs responded quickly and tied things up after a pair of free throws from Ferrell.

Another quick run saw the home team jump out to its largest lead of the game (18-10) with 2:02 to play in the first quarter, but UTA was once again responded and cut the lead to 18-15 at the end of the period.
 
Louisiana went ahead 35-27 late in the first half, but UTA responded with a 7-2 run over the final 2:25 of the period to cut Louisiana's lead down to three (37-34) at the intermission.
 
In the second half, UTA got hot and used a run, which included a fast-break layup by Evans, to jump ahead 44-43. The 1-point lead was UTA's first lead since early in the first quarter. The Lady Mavericks pushed their lead to seven points (54-47) by the end of the third period.

 UTA continued to push tempo and extended their lead to 59-49 with 8:27 to play. Louisiana clawed their way back into the game and cut the UTA lead down to four points (68-64), but the Lady Mavs were able to hold off any comeback efforts and pick up the road win, 73-66.

The Lady Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday afternoon (March 7), when they head to Monroe, La. to battle ULM in the final game of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.
