CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – It came down to the final match of the day, but the UT Arlington men's tennis team fell in a 4-3 battle to Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks fall to 4-2 on the season with the loss.
The Mavs jumped out to an early doubles lead, winning on courts two and three by the score of 6-3 on both courts.Â
Angel Diaz and
Solano Caffarena won the No. 2 doubles position, while
Miguel Cabrera and
Daichi Akiyoshi won the No. 3 doubles spot. Doubles ended before
Eduard Simo and
Alan Sau Franco could finish their match.
UTA continued strong to start singles play.Â
Angel Diaz was the first to finish, taking Court One 6-2, 6-3. Corpus Christi took court four over Caffarena 6-3, 6-1, but Simo immediately followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 6 position. Leading 3-1, the Mavericks needed one more point to win the match, but the Islanders had other plans.
Sau Franco, Cabrera and
Ricardo Alban each fell in three set thrillers. Cabrera jumped out to an early 6-4 lead, but dropped the following two sets 4-6, 0-6, which was the match deciding point. Sau Franco and Alban both rebounded from a set one loss, by winning set two 6-3 but ultimately fell in the final set to give two more points to the Islanders.
The Mavericks will stay on the road, traveling to Beaumont tomorrow at 11 am for a match against Lamar.
