Gerlich Becomes Winningest Coach In @UTAMavsWBB History

MONROE, La. The UTA women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with its seventh straight victory (74-67) Saturday afternoon at ULM.

The win also marked head coach Krista Gerlich's 120th as UTA head coach, breaking a tie with Donna Capps for the most in program history. Gerlich also secures her third 20-win season in Arlington and the 11th overall for the Lady Mavs.

The Lady Mavs (20-10, 13-4, SBC) shot an impressive 50 percent from the field, including shooting a scorching 54 percent in the second quarter when they took a lead they would not surrender.

Senior standout Marie Benson led the way with a dominant 29-point, 14-rebound double-double in the win. Benson led all scorers. Claire Chastain (13) and Katie Ferrell (11) also scored in double figures for UTA. Ferrell's 11 rebounds gave UTA a pair of double-doubles in the victory. Terryn Milton chipped in with four points and five assists. Katie Mayhue added six points on 1-of-2 shooting from beyond the arc.

A back-and-forth first quarter ended with the Warhawks (3-26, 1-17, SBC) up 20-19. ULM extended the lead to three a few minutes into the second quarter, but an 11-1 UTA run put the Lady Mavs up for good.

UTA extended the lead to as many as 10 in the third quarter and kept ULM at arms length the rest of the way to close out the regular season with a road win.

The Lady Mavs will now turn their attention to postseason play, as they will enter the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at the No. 3 seed. The third-seeded Lady Mavs will host two 1st round games and also a quarterfinal round matchup at College Park Center March 10-11. The winner of the quarterfinal game will advance to play in the semifinals (March 14) and possibly the finals (March 15) at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
