ARLINGTON, Texas - An 8th inning error was the difference maker on Sunday afternoon as the UT Arlington baseball team (12-3) defeated UTSA 1-0 at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Mavericks are off to their best start since 2001.
"We found a different way to win today with pitching," said head coach Darin Thomas. "[David] Moffat was outstanding against a good club."
Moffat earned the start, tossing 7.1 shutout innings while allowing just three hits.
Logan Austin (W, 2-0) picked up the win for the Mavs in relief effort.
Cesar Gomez (S, 4) closed the game out to come away with the save.
The Mavericks made contact at the plate, but only came away with four hits on the day.
Connor Aube finished 2-for-4 at the plate and scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning.
Andrew Miller (1-for-4) and
Andrew Keefer (1-for-4) both finished with one hit.
Moffat had a perfect game going into the sixth inning before Hobbs Price doubled to end it. That would be all the Roadrunners would get, however, as Moffat put down the next two batters.
The Mavericks threatened in the seventh inning loading the bases with two walks and a single. A ground ball to shortstop ended the UTA threat as UTSA got the force out at second to end the inning.
In the top of the eighth, the Roadrunners used a leadoff single to get an early baserunner. After stealing second, the runner advanced to third with a sacrifice bunt. With just one out, Austin entered the game on the mound, forcing a flyout and striking out the final batter to escape the inning.
In the bottom frame, Aube led off with a single to left field and advanced to second with a sacrifice bunt by
Phillip Childs. The Roadrunners intentionally walked
Zac Cook to create a double play situation. The plan appeared to work as
Andrew Miller hit a ground ball to third base. After getting the force out at second, the second baseman sailed the throw high over first base on the double play attempt. Aube took advantage of the miscue and advanced home to score the go-ahead run.
The Roadrunners had another runner in scoring position in the top of the ninth following a walk and error on a pickoff attempt. UTSA would leave the runner stranded to end the game and
Andrew Miller tracked down a foul ball, reaching over the fence to get the final out of the game and secure the win for the Mavericks.
UTA will have another tough game on Tuesday, when they host the Oklahoma Sooners at 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
