ARLINGTON – While the NCAA's 2020 outdoor track and field season may have been canceled due to the worldwide Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic, the UT Arlington men's and women's track and field and cross country programs still found plenty of time to achieve greatness during the 2019 cross country and 2020 indoor track seasons under veteran coach
John Sauerhage.
Â
Here are some of the achievements:
Â
- Following the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships, the UTA men collected three top honors as Justin Domangue was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer, Bryson DeBerry claimed Newcomer of the Year honors and Ismael Kone was tabbed the Men's Most Outstanding Freshman, according to a vote by the league's coaches.
Â
- Domangue was the indoor league meet's High Point Scorer, totaling 26 points for the Mavericks. He was the conference champion in the 3000 meters (8:23.79) and also was the runner up in both the mile (4:15.69) and the 5000 meters (14:38.16). He became the fourth Maverick in the last six years to win the award, joining Emil Blomberg (2015), Joel Duren (2017) and Erik Martinsson (2019).
Â
- DeBerry was the SBC high jump champion in his first league championship meet appearance. In his victory, he equaled both the UTA and Sun Belt Conference all-time records with a clearance of 7-2 ½ (2.20m). That mark also put him among the nation's top 20 in the event in 2020.
Â
- Kone was the only male to win multiple individual events at the SBC Indoor Championships, as he swept the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. He ran a personal-best 6.74 to win the 60m and followed it up with a 21.03 in the 200m, the No. 3 time in school history.
Â
- Freshman Joel Bengtsson won the league title in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a clocking of 8.02. His time matched his season best and tied for the No. 5 time in school history.
Â
- The women recorded a signature victory in the 4x400m relay at the SBC meet as the Mavericks' squad of Jordyn McCarden, Mikayla Koester, Vanessa Ugorji and Tatyana Terrell posted a time of 3:44.51, which was seven seconds faster than the team's previous best time in 2020. In addition, it was the No. 2 clocking in school history, just .21 off the UTA mark.
Â
- Also at the league meet, Nolan Daggs smashed the UTA record in the weight throw by nearly three feet with a toss of 62-0 ¼ (18.90m). That mark was good for a bronze medal finish.
Â
- Lucas Van Klaveren made the podium in the men's heptathlon after a third-place showing. He scored a personal-best sum of 5,305, which was the No. 3 mark in school history. In addition, he was just two points behind second place and 19 out of first place.
Â
- As a team, the UTA men finished as the Sun Belt Conference runner up and have placed either first or second at every indoor meet since joining the league in 2014.
Â
- In all, the men set or matched two school records and had six top-5 all-time performances, while the women landed five top-5 performances in school history.
Â
- In cross country, Domangue capped his highly decorated cross country career in grand style, becoming the first NCAA All-American in school history after recording a top-40 finish at the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships. He also became the first Maverick runner ever to compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championships more than once. In all, it was the seventh-ever NCAA appearance by a UTA male, and the fourth since 2016.
Â
- Fresh off a program-best fourth-place showing at the NCAA South Central Regional, Domangue continued his November to remember by completing the 10k circuit at the NCAA Championships in 31:17.9 to finish in 36th place.
Â
- Domangue took the men's individual title at both the Gerald Richey Invitational and the Ken Garland Invitational to give him three career victories.
Â
- Domangue placed third on the 8k circuit with a time of 24:13.1. It was his third straight season with a top-5 finish at the meet. Domangue finished his SBC cross country career as a four-time all-conference performer, grabbing first-team accolades three times.
Â
- The UTA women's cross country team was crowned the team champion at the Gerald Richey Invitational. The Maverick women placed four inside the top 10, led by junior Madeleine Rowe, who took fourth place with a strong 5k clocking of 18:35.4. Freshman Mathilde Ruud (sixth), Shayla Huebner (seventh) and Valeria Diaz (eighth) also were in the top 10.
Â
- The women's team finished fifth at the Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships, a five-spot improvement from its 2018 result.
Â
- Both teams ranked among the top 15 in the USTFCCCA South Central Regional Rankings during the season.
