ARLINGTON – Terryn Milton and
Bre Wickware scored in double figures as the UTA women's basketball team picked up a big 62-43 win over Arkansas State on Friday night at College Park Center.
With the win, UTA improves to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in Sun Belt play, while the Red Wolves fall to 9-4 on the season and 4-3 in league action.
Milton shot 5-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from behind the arc to finish with 12 points. The Owasso, Okla. native also dished out eight assists and pulled down five boards. Wickware grabbed six rebounds and recorded three assists to go with her 12 points.
Shyia Smith, who was celebrating her 21st birthday, finished with eight points and seven rebounds, while
Misty Dossey registered eight points, three boards, two steals and a pair of blocks.
Jordynn Hernandez chipped in with six points, four rebounds and four steals and
Katie Ferrell filled the stat sheet with seven points, six steals, six rebounds and four assists.
Morgan Wallace led A-State with a game-high 14 points and nine rebounds, while Jada Stinson added 11 points.
The Lady Mavs, who held their 6th consecutive opponent below 55 points, limited Arkansas State to single digit points in the second and fourth quarters. UTA's defense forced the visitors into 22 turnovers and held the Red Wolves to just 13-of-49 (26.5 percent) shooting from the field. For the third time in the last five outings, UTA's defense held an opponent below 30 percent shooting.
UT Arlington lost the battle of the boards 42-40, but won the points off turnovers (23-7) and points in the paint (34-18) battles.
The two teams will meet again Saturday afternoon in the series finale. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. at the CPC.
