ARLINGTON – Four players scored in double figures as the UTA women's basketball team defeated Arkansas State, 80-71, on Saturday to secure the sweep of their 2-game Sun Belt series.
With the win, UTA improves to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in Sun Belt play, while the Red Wolves fall to 9-5 on the season and 4-4 in league action.
Bre Wickware led the Lady Mavs with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. She also added six boards, four assists and a career-high five steals.
Misty Dossey finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while
Terryn Milton added 12 points and four rebounds.
Jordynn Hernandez chipped in 10 points, four assists and three steals and
Shyia Smith tallied eight points, seven boards and a pair of assists.
Jada Stinson led A-State with a game-high 24 points, while Morgan Wallace added nine points, 14 rebounds and five assists.
UTA knocked down 28-of-64 shots (43.8 percent) from the field, while the Red Wolves shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) on the day. The Lady Mavs used full court pressure and turned Arkansas State over 21 times. The Lady Mavericks lost the battle of the boards 44-34, but won the points off turnovers (26-13), points in the paint (38-20) and fast break points (23-7) battles. The Lady Mavs reserves also outscored the A-State bench (15-1).
UTA will be back in action next weekend (Feb. 5-6) when they head to Monroe, La. to face ULM in a 2-game SBC series.
