Cross Country Closes Season at NCAA Regionals

WACO – The UT Arlington cross country team concluded its season on Friday morning as they competed in the NCAA South Central Regional Championships hosted by Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.

The women put together a solid showing to place 15th with 412 points while the men landed in 20th with a score of 411.

Three runners really stood out in the race as they earned Top 50 finishes as seniors Charlotte Murphy and Valeria Diaz-Gonzales led the way on the women's side while Marquentin Barnes was terrific on the men's side.

"Charlotte keeps improving every week while Valeria really finished off the fall season with a nice effort," said Head Coach John Sauerhage. "Marquentin showed a lot of heart in his run this morning. I am looking forward to the indoor season."

Murphy continued her stellar showing in the latter half of the season as she set a new personal record in the 6k with a run of 21:47.1 to place 33rd overall, leading the Mavs pack. Diaz-Gonzales also set a new personal best as placed 43rd with a time of 22:02.9.

Senior Madeleine Rowe was next to cross the line at 23:19.9 followed by Mathilde Ruud at 23:39.0 and Claire Compher at 24:47.2.

On the men's side, Barnes was outstanding as he shattered his personal best by nearly a minute in the 10k with a time of 32:10.0 to lead the Mavs with an individual finish of 35th.

Sophomore Tyler Rodriguez broke into the Top 100 with a time of 33:33.6 and placing 90th followed by freshman Alfredo Corona in 94th at 33:46.7.

Sophomore Patrick Estes checked in with a time of 34:17.9 while sophomore Jacob Ye came in at 34:46.0.

With the season complete, the cross country athletes will turn their attention to the upcoming track season beginning with indoors. The first meet will come on Jan. 14, 2022 as the Mavs will compete at the Ted Nelson Invitational in College Station.
