Fourth Quarter Surge Leads Lady Mavs Past UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The UT Arlington women's basketball team outscored UNLV 24-17 in the final frame to come from behind again and earn a huge road victory, 75-72.

The win moves the Lady Mavs to 4-1 as they have won four straight games since their season-opening loss to No. 6 Baylor.

Junior Starr Jacobs scored a season-high 28 points on 14 of 24 shooting to go with nine boards and four steals, while senior Claire Chastain added 15 points with three rebounds. Chastain was 8 of 9 from the charity stripe, including four key free throws with under 30 seconds to play.

Senior Terryn Milton scored 10 with three assists and two steals, while senior De'Sha Benjamin scored 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Katie Ferrell did it all with four points, nine rebounds, eight assists, a steal, and a block.

Desi-Rae Young led UNLV with 19 points, while Nneka Obiazor added15 points and 11 rebounds. Essence Booker scored 14 to go with seven assists.

It was a hot start for the Lady Mavs as they raced out to a 14-6 lead behind four points from Jacobs and a 3-pointer from Benjamin. UNLV used an 8-0 run to even the game at 14 before a 10-0 run gave UTA a double-digit lead as freshman Reniya Jones and senior Camryn Hawkins each knocked down a deep ball.

The Lady Mavs held a 24-16 to start the second quarter, but things turned sour quickly as UNLV used a massive 20-4 run to flip the script and take the lead. The Lady Rebels outscored UTA 24-10 to take a 40-34 lead at the break.

Lay-ups from Jacobs and Ferrell almost immediately cut it to a two point game and the two teams traded buckets for most of the quarter. The Lady Mavs eventually retook the lead at 45-44 after a three from Benjamin and then a steal on the other end from Benjamin, leading to a lay-in for Jacobs.

A 9-2 run from UNLV pushed the lead back to six, but UTA closed the gap and trailed 55-51 going into the final quarter.

The Lady Mavs battled throughout the first five minutes, but the Lady Rebels maintained a four-point lead despite UTA pushes. Trailing 64-60, Jacobs took over and scored the next four points before Chastain knocked down two free throws to give the Lady Mavs the lead for good.

The Lady Mavs were the aggressors down the stretch, and it paid off in their favor, as stops and key free throws from the likes of Chastain and Benjamin helped ice the game. Milton added a key runner in the lane with 55 seconds to play to keep the lead at three. Chastain was especially clutch as she was 4 of 4 in the final 13 seconds.
