Mavs Start Weekend With Sweep Over A-State

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington volleyball team picked up their second straight sweep, taking down Arkansas State 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 at the College Park Center on Friday night. The Mavericks improve to 8-14 overall and 6-7 in the Sun Belt Conference.

UTA was led offensively by Briana Brown (12 kills), Brianna Ford (12 kills) and Brooke Townsend (10 kills). Ford also finished with a .480 attack percentage and had zero errors in 25 swings.  Brown was almost as effective, finishing with just one error in 26 swings.

Townsend picked up her 11-career double-double and second on the season, adding 11 digs.  Alli Wells led the Mavericks with 15 digs as she continues her streak of double-digit digs in every match this season.

At the net, Kainah Williams led the Mavericks with five blocks.  Brown (3 blocks) and Ford (3 blocks) were also forces at the net, ending with multi-block performances.

SET 1 | UTA 25, ASU 17 | UTA LEADS 1-0
UTA jumped out to an early 8-3 lead following a kill from Brianna Ford, starting a 3-0 run and forcing a Red Wolves timeout. UTA would lead by as many as ten points (21-11) following a kill from Briana Brown.  Arkansas State would try to fight back, winning six of the next nine points to make it 24-17, but it was too late as the Mavericks ended the set with a Kaylen Beaty kill.

SET 2 | UTA 25, ASU 23 | UTA LEADS 2-0
The Mavericks came out firing on all cylinders scoring the first eight points and taking a 12-2 lead following a kill from Monica LaFleur. The momentum quickly changed, as the Red Wolves used a series of runs to come back and tie the set at 20. With the match still tied at 23, Briana Brown powered down back-to-back kills to end the set.

SET 3 | UTA 25, ASU 19 | UTA WINS 3-0
The Mavs jumped out to another commanding lead in set three, taking a 13-5 lead following back-to-back kills from Brooke Townsend. UTA continued to increase their lead until Monica LaFleur put the Mavs up ten points (19-9). The Red Wolves responded with a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 24-19, but Townsend ended the set and the match with a kill.
