STILLWATER, Okla. – The UT Arlington women's basketball team could not overcome a season-high 19 turnovers as Oklahoma State used a big fourth quarter to pull away for a 61-46 victory on Friday evening inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Junior
Starr Jacobs scored 14 points on 6 of 12 shooting to go with six boards, while senior
Terryn Milton added 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Senior
Claire Chastain scored eight with five rebounds and two blocks, and senior
Katie Ferrell scored four points to go with seven boards, five assists, and two steals. Seniors
De'Sha Benjamin and
Camryn Hawkins each added four.
Lauren Fields led OSU with 23 points and three steals, while Lexy Keys scored 11 off the bench, including three 3-pointers. Kassidy De Lapp maybe had the biggest impact on the game with six points off the bench as well as eight boards, three steals, and four blocks.
After Jacobs opened the game with a lay-in, Oklahoma State responded with seven straight to open up a 7-2 lead. UTA battled back to make it an 11-8 game before a massive 9-0 run by the Cowgirls behind Fields, and a spark from De Lapp made it a 20-8 game.
The Lady Mavs scored the final four points to close the gap to 20-12 at the end of the quarter. Fields scored 10 in the quarter on 4 of 6 shooting.
UTA closed the game within four as Jacobs got rolling while Milton provided some scoring off the bench. However, Keys would get hot in the second, along with Fields, to help push the lead back to eight. UTA held OSU to 11 points on 3 of 17 shooting, but five each from Fields and Keys as well as seven Lady Mav turnovers helped the Cowgirls keep distance going into the break.
The Lady Mavs rebounded in the third quarter and came out firing as a 10-0 behind stout defense suddenly put UTA in front 33-31 with 5:36 to play in the third. Milton scored four during the spurt while Ferrell and Jacobs each added bucket, with Hawkins adding the go-ahead lay-up on a Chastain steal.
However, UTA lost Keys on the ensuing possession as she buried a 3-pointer to put OSU back ahead. Milton cut it back to one on the other end, but huge offensive boards by the Cowgirls led to Keys draining another triple and Fields pushing a driving lay-in to get the lead back to eight.
Chastain got it back to six, and UTA tried to find another basket in the final two minutes to get it back to four. However, disaster struck in the final seconds of the third as a leaping steal from Fields led to a lay-in from De Lapp at the buzzer and swung all the momentum in OSU's favor as they led 45-37 going to the fourth.
UTA could never recover from that moment as the Cowgirls closed things out with a 16-9 advantage in the fourth to pull away and take the 61-56 home victory.
