ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team dropped both of their games in their season opener against No. 25 Arkansas (5-2) on Monday at Allan Saxe Field. The Mavs came up short in game one of the double-header against the Razorbacks with a final score of 10-6 before battling a close contest in game two ending in just a one-run game (4-3).
"I really thought they came out fired up," said Brun. "With all of the challenges we've had this week I was really proud with how they came out, never backed down and kept battling."
Kenedy Hines picked up the start in the circle for game one and tossed two innings in the loss. Senior Jojo Valencia replaced Hines in the second inning, allowing two runs on three hits, while walking one batter. In the sixth inning,
Laura Henriksen came into the game only allowing one hit.
Freshman
Gracie Bumpurs got her first start in the circle as a Maverick for game two of the double-header. Bumpurs powered through five innings with allowing three runs on just four hits.
Allie Gardiner replaced Bumpurs in the sixth inning and finished the game allowing one run with one hit.
UTA finished with 12 hits on the day led by
KJ Murphy and
Jadyn Erickson, both of whom finished with a .500 batting average at the plate. The Mavs battled back in game one while putting a few hits together to get on the board.
Kimber Cortemelia added to the score with a solo shot to cut the deficit down to four.
The Mavericks put up quite a fight in game two but unfortunately came up short ending with a final score of 4-3. UTA was trailing by three in the sixth inning before
Courtney Ogle blasted a two-run homerun to make it a one-run ball game. Sophomore
Lindsey Franklin recorded her first career at-bat and jacked a solo homerun over the left field fence. Unfortunately, UTA's comeback bid fell short.

Sophie Wideman collected two RBI's on the day joined by both Ogle and Cortemelia.
UTA will be back in action Wednesday (Feb. 24) in Waco, Texas to face No. 18 Baylor at Getterman Stadium. The first pitch is set to begin at 6 p.m.
