Six Run 4th Inning Dooms Mavericks in Loss to No. 25 Oklahoma

GLOBE LIFE FIELD – The UT Arlington baseball team fell to the No. 25 Oklahoma Sooners on Wednesday night at Globe Life Field, 7-1. With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 1-1 while the Sooners improve to 2-2.

Six pitchers combined for the nine-inning game, with sophomore transfer Zach Norris (0-1) picking up his first start. The pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts, with Michael Wong leading the pack with three strikeouts in two innings pitched.  Logan Austin (1 IP) and Tristan Tom (1 IP) each finished with two strikeouts.

The Mavericks finished with six hits on the day, led by Wyatt Divis' two hits.  Phillip Childs, Josh Minjarez, Boone Montgomery and Tyler Rice each finished with one hit. The Mavs reached base an additional five times from walks. While getting on base wasn't an issue for the Mavs, UTA couldn't capitalize going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

The game was scoreless going into the fourth innings, but the Sooners used a six-run inning that would ultimately be the difference maker in the game. The first four batters for Oklahoma reached on singles, scoring two runs along the way.  Following a sacrifice bunt, a double down that was ripped past first scored two more.  Two more singles that found the second base gap scored two more runs to make it a 6-0 Sooner advantage.

The Mavs threatened in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases off two walks and a Minjarez single.  UTA was unable to get anyone home, as back-to-back outs ended the inning.

UTA would load the bases again in the bottom of the six with the help from an error on a fielder's choice by Oklahoma.  Cole Solomon hit into a fielder's choice with one out to score Minjarez in what would be the lone run for the Mavericks.

The Sooners extended their advantage back to six runs with a solo home run in the seventh.

The Mavericks would not threaten again falling 7-1.
