SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team split the first day at the UTSA Classic in San Antonio. After a seventh inning threat, UTA picked up its first win of the 2021 season against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, 9-7, before falling to the Kansas Jayhawks in game two,11-4.

Aileen Garcia went 3-6 hitting leading the Mavs with a .500 batting average on the day.

Sophie Wideman blasted a three-run home run- her first in a UTA uniform- in the fifth inning extending the Mavs' lead, 8-0.

Peejay Brun utilized three pitchers in the circle. Freshman
Gracie Bumpurs earned the start against the Islanders allowing two runs over 5.2 innings pitched.
Sophomore
Allie Gardiner replaced Bumpurs on the mound facing five batters before
Kenedy Hines came in to toss the last two outs to seal the win.
PLAY BY PLAY: Game 1 vs. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (W 9-7)
- After two scoreless innings, UTA plates two runs across off a pair of Islander errors in the third inning.
- In the fourth following a three up three down inning to end the third, Ogle blasts her second home run this season extending their lead 3-0.
- A Reagan Hukill bomb to left field in the fifth added one more for UTA before back-to-back singles down the left field line, courtesy of Courtney Ogle and pinch-hitter Lindsey Franklin, scored KJ Murphy.
- It wasn't long before transfer Sophie Wideman knocked a three-run home run- her first this season- to extend the lead 8-0 in the fifth inning.
- Texas A&M – Corpus Christi scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning courtesy of a double and two singles for a score of 8-1.
- An RBI from the bat of Aileen Garcia scored sophomore Jadyn Erickson in the sixth.
- The Islanders rally in the bottom of the seventh inning hitting back-to-back two-run home runs and a solo home run plated threatening UTA making it a close contest of a 9-7 game.
- Second baseman Jessica Carreon made the final out to pick up the first win for UTA, 9-7.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Game 2 vs. Kansas (L 11-4)
Senior outfielder Madi Miller went 1-3 at the plate with two RBI's blasting a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, lifting the Mavs to a 3-1 lead.
Aileen Garcia followed closely behind Miller, going 1-2 to finish 3-6 at the plate over both games.
A Kansas three-run home run in the third inning put the Jayhawks up by one not soon before tagging tree more runs off of a total of six walks, making it a 7-3 games.
After Garcia scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, the Mavericks were unable to put anymore across remaining scoreless the rest of the game.
Kenedy Hines started on the mound and threw 2.1 innings allowing seven runs. The sophomore was followed by
Laura Henriksen who faced just four batters before senior Jojo Valencia closed things out (4.1 innings pitched, 5 hits).
PLAY BY PLAY: Game 2 vs. Kansas (L 11-4)
- UTA answered back in the bottom of the first with an RBI by Sophie Wideman after Kansas took an early lead 1-0.
- Tied 1-1 in the second, junior Kimber Cortemelia touched base on a single to center field before Madi Miller scored Cortemelia off a two-run blast to left field that lifted the Mavericks 3-1.
- The Jayhawks responded with a three-run home run that put them up 4-3. Not long after, Kansas tagged three more runs off a total of six walks which made it a 7-3 game.
- A solo home run in the top of the fourth would add one more to the board for Kansas.
- Neither UTA or Kansas were able to put any more runs across in the fifth and sixth inning.
- The Jayhawks plated two more courtesy of a pair of walks and a single to extend their lead 11-4.
- The Mavericks were unable to answer back in their last chance at the plate, falling to Kansas with a final score, 11-4.
UP NEXT
The Mavericks will open Saturday play at 10:00 a.m. against the Islanders before taking the field again five hours later at 3:00 p.m. to face the Kansas Jayhawks.
