Softball Falls Twice Day Two in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team dropped both games on day 2 of the UTSA Classic after battling against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi in game one, falling 8-12. The Mavericks then went on to face host UTSA which ended with a tough 1-9 loss after five innings.

The Mavericks offense came alive in game one with a 3-run home run from Aileen Garcia and a solo home run from senior Madi Miller that would lift UTA for the first time in the game to 7-5 in the fifth inning. After the Mavs scratched one more run, they remained scoreless the rest of the game while the Islanders answered back with a total of 7 runs across the sixth and seventh inning ending in an 8-12 loss. 

After sophomore Reagan Hukill scored UTA's lone run in the second inning from a solo home run in game two, the Mavericks were unable to get any more runs across for the rest of the game. UTSA went on to plate 5 runs across in the third then 4 more in the fifth which ended after five innings, 1-9. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: GAME 1 vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi (L 8-12)

It was an active fifth inning for the Mavs at the plate after a 3-run home run from senior first baseman Aileen Garcia and a solo shot from Madi Miller that would ultimately lift UTA 7-5 over TAMU – CC.

Junior Kimber Cortemelia led the Mavs offensively going 3-4 with 3 singles. Following closely was Garcia who went 2-4 with a double and 3-run home run.

The Mavericks were unable to get anything going for the remainder of the game while the Islanders answered back with 7 runs over the sixth and seventh inning which put them up 12-8.

In the circle, head coach Peejay Brun utilized four arms. Sophomore Kenedy Hines started on the mound for UTA and threw two innings before senior Jojo Valencia entered the circle in the top of the third. Valencia faced just four batters before Hines re-entered in the circle.

Hines went on to throw four more innings before junior Allie Gardiner took the mound facing just five batters. Gracie Bumpurs made an appearance for the Mavs in the seventh tossing the last two outs of the inning. Hines would ultimately get the loss (0-3).

PLAY BY PLAY: Game 1 vs. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (L 8-12)
  • Texas A&M – Corpus Christi got an early lead and scored one run off a solo home run in the top of the first inning.
  • A three-run inning in the top of the second extended the Islanders' lead 4-0.
  • UTA headed into the third inning remaining scoreless.
  • After the Islanders scored one more in the third, the Mavs scored their first runs of the game plating Emily Evans and Jessi Carreon from an RBI-single courtesy of junior Kimber Cortemelia which made it 5-2.
  • Aileen Garcia led off with a double down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth who then scored after sophomore Reagan Hukill reached first on an error, making it a 5-3 game.
  • Cortemelia reached on an error before senior KJ Murphy drew a walk in the bottom of the fifth. Houston native Garcia broke it open with a three-run bomb over the left field fence scoring Cortemelia and Murphy.
  • Madi Miller joined Garcia and hit a solo shot to lift UTA 7-5.
  • After two walks and a single loaded the bases for TAMU – CC, a grand slam lifted the Islanders to a 9-7 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
  • UTA answered back with an RBI- double from the bat of Murphy which scored left fielder Jadyn Erickson. UTA headed into the seventh inning trailing by one.
  • An RBI- double, RBI- single and a walk from the Islanders gave them a 12-8 lead in the seventh.
  • The Mavericks went three up three down unable to get anything going in their last at-bats and came up short against the Islanders, 8-12.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Game 2 vs. UTSA (L 1-9)

KJ Murphy, Aileen Garcia, Reagan Hukill and Jessi Carreon all went 1-2 in game two.

UTA came out in the second inning and scored first from a home run to center field by sophomore Reagan Hukill - her second of the tournament- which made it 1-0.

The Mavericks struggled at the plate and were unable to get any more runs across for the remainder of the game while UTSA scored 5 in the bottom of the third then 4 more in the fifth which ultimately ended in a run-rule, 1-9 in five innings. 

Gracie Bumpurs got the start on the mound for game two against the Roadrunners allowing 6 runs across 4.1 innings pitched before left-handed pitcher Jojo Valencia replaced Bumpurs. Valencia went on to face just one batter before the game ended in a run-rule defeat, 1-9. 

PLAY BY PLAY: Game 2 vs. UTSA (L 1-9)
  • Courtesy of a Reagan Hukill home run to center field, the Mavs took an early lead in the second, 1-0.
  • UTSA answered back in the third with a pair of home runs to lift the Roadrunners 5-1. 
  • After two scoreless innings for the Mavs, the Roadrunners plated four more runs which would end the game, 1-9, after five innings.

The Mavericks will end tournament play at Roadrunner Field Sunday vs. Kansas at 10:00 a.m.
