ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington baseball team was outscored 6-1 in the final four innings, losing to the South Alabama Jaguars 6-3 Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Mavericks fall to 7-11 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt, while the Jaguars improve to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in the Sun Belt.
David Moffat (L, 2-1) started for the Mavericks on the mound tossing 5.2 innings. Moffat gave up three runs off six hits and three walks.
Tanner King and
Michael Wong pitched final 3.1 innings in relief. King gave up one run off one hit, while Wong gave up two runs off one hit.
The Mavericks finished with four hits. Josh MInjarez led the Mavericks with two hits on the day, while
Connor Aube and
Dylan Paul each finished with one. Minjarez and Aube both finished with one RBI, Aube's coming off a solo home run.
UTA got on board in the second inning.
Andrew Miller walked and proceeded to steal second before Minjarez drove him in with a single to left field.
Aube extended the lead for the Mavericks, hitting a home run for the second straight day, to make it a 2-0 game.
After picking up the first two outs in the sixth inning. Caleb Balgaard single to give the Jags a baserunner. A ground ball to third base appeared to end the inning, but was called foul. Reid Powers used the second chance to get on base from a walk. Hunter Stokes drove in the first Jaguar run with a double to left field, before Santi Montiel drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single.
South Alabama pushed their lead to two runs the following inning, using a double to drive in Noah Bailey, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
Two walks in the ninth inning gave the Jags runners on first and second. Powers hit a deep ball to right field, bouncing off the wall to drive in both base runners for a stand-up triple.
Down 6-2 in the bottom of the 9th, three straight walks put Miller, Divis and Minjarez on base. A wild pitch allowed Miller to score to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
Anthony Dominguez connected on a line drive to left field, but Ethan Wilson made a diving catch to prevent any runners from scoring and end the game.
The Mavericks will be back at Clay Gould Ballpark on Tuesday at 6:30 pm to host the Baylor Bears for a mid-week game.
