HOUSTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team fell in the first of four games against the Houston Cougars on Friday night at Schroeder Park, 4-1. The Mavericks fall to 8-12 overall while the Cougars improve to 11-9.
Carlos Tavera (L, 0-3) started on the mound for the Mavericks tossing 6.2 innings in the loss. He struck out eight batter and allowed three runs off five hits.
Tanner King came on in relief, throwing the final 1.1 innings while allowing one run off three hits.
UTA finished with seven hits on the night. In his first game back,
Phillip Childs finished with two hits and scored the lone run for the Mavericks.
Dylan Paul also finished with a multi-hit game and was responsible for driving in Childs.
Boone Montgomery,
Josh Minjarez and
JD Wadleigh came away with the other hits for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks scored first, putting up one run in the 4
th inning.
Phillip Childs led off with a walk and was drove in by single off the bat of
Dylan Paul.
The lead only lasted an inning as the Cougars used a two-out rally in the 5
th inning to score two runs. Houston used two singles and a triple to take a 2-1 lead.
A one-out solo home run in the 7
th inning pushed the Houston lead to two runs. The Cougars used a fielders choice in the 8
th inning to pick up an insurance run and extend their lead to 4-1.
The Mavericks and Cougars will play a double header tomorrow with the first game starting at 2 pm at Schroeder Park.
