Softball Splits Day 3 of Boerner Invitational

In 10 Innings, UTA Walks It Off For the 3-2 Victory

ARLINGTON, Texas – After a total of 10 innings, the UT Arlington softball team came out on top with a big 3-2 win in game one against Missouri State at Allan Saxe Field. In game two against Wichita State, the Mavericks battled putting three runs on the board over the fifth and sixth inning but ultimately fell short, 6-3.

In game one, the Mavericks put up a fight that led to extra innings. Kenedy Hines knocked in Sophie Wideman, the winning run, on third base with a sacrifice fly to left field to secure the 3-2 victory.

After Wichita State put up six runs over five innings, UTA's Reagan Hukill and KJ Murphy smacked a pair of homeruns to make it a 6-3 game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE- Game 1 vs. Missouri State (W 3-2)
Sophomore Kenedy Hines paced UTA's offense going 2-4 and collected an RBI while senior Aileen Garcia went 1-2 and tallied three walks.

Senior left-hander Jojo Valencia got the start in the circle for UTA and threw 4.2 innings allowing just one run. The senior faced 21 batters and permitted four hits.
Kenedy Hines made an appearance in the fifth inning to replace Valencia. The sophomore went on to face just one batter before junior Allie Gardiner took over on the mound. The California native went on to throw the remainder of the game in extra innings (5 IP) and recorded her first win of the season.

PLAY BY PLAY- Game 1 vs. Missouri State (W 3-2)
  • Missouri State added a run on the board to take an early lead 1-0 off a solo homerun in the top of the second inning.
  • UTA remained scoreless through five innings until a trio of singles from Kenedy Hines, pinch-hitter Lindsey Franklin and Amber Langston put two runs on the board for UTA.
  • The Bears plated the tying run in the top of the seventh inning and made it 2-2.
  • Both teams were unable to plate the go ahead run at second base throughout two innings of the international tie breaker until the bottom of the tenth inning, Hines scored Sophie Wideman with a sacrifice fly to left field to take the 3-2 victory over the Bears.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE- Game 2 vs. Wichita State (L 3-6)
The Mavericks had 4 hits in the game from senior Courtney Ogle who went 1-2 with a single to left and sophomore Reagan Hukill who went 2-2 with her third homerun of the year. KJ Murphy knotched her first homerun of the season and a totale of 11 career homeruns. 

Kenedy Hines got the start on the mound for game two and faced 13 batters over 2.1 innings pitched. Junior Laura Henriksen came in to replaced Hines in the fourth inning and allowed two hits while facing 11 batters (1.2 IP).

Allie Gardiner made an appearance in the fourth inning in the circle and permitted just two hits over three innings pitched.

The Mavericks fell short to Wichita State 6-3 and Hines would get the loss.

PLAY BY PLAY- Game 1 vs. Wichita State (L 3-6)
  • Wichita State scored the first runs of the game to take the lead 4-0 in the top of the third inning.
  • The Shockers added on to their lead with two more runs off a homerun to right field, 6-1.
  • Reagan Hukill knocked in one more run off a homerun to center field to add the first run for the Mavericks, 6-1.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, KJ Murphy recorded her first homerun of the season to the left field which cut the deficit down to three.
  • In UTA's last at-bats, the Mavericks were unable to plate anymore runs on the board and fell to Wichita State 6-3.

The Mavs will wrap up tournament play Sunday afternoon as they face North Texas at 2:00 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field.
