PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – A first round matchup between the UT Arlington men's tennis team and Troy a the Sun Belt Conference Tournament became an intensity-filled match that came down to the final match with the Trojans topping the Maverick 4-3 at the Peachtree City Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
The Mavericks went to work in doubles competition. On Court Three,
Alejandro Hayen and
Alan Sau Franco never trailed in their match, quickly gaining the first doubles victory for the Mavericks with a 6-3 win.
After falling behind 2-1 to begin the match at No. 1,
Miguel Cabrera quickly fought back and overtook the top Trojan tandem to win 6-3 and claim the second victory for the Mavericks and earn the doubles point for UTA.
After winning the doubles point, the Mavericks were slow to start in singles play. Each position, except for
Nick Beamish at No. 6 and
Angel Diaz at No. 1 lost their first set.
Alan Sau Franco and
Miguel Cabrera were the first two to fall at No. 2 and No. 3. Sau Franco dropped his match 6-1, 6-4 as the Trojans tied it. Cabrera quickly followed with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to put the Trojans in the lead.
At No. 4,
Alejandro Hayen came back from a 5-7 first set loss with a 6-4 win in set two to force a decisive third set but was unable to win falling 6-3 as the Trojans took their third point of the match.
The Mavericks tied the match at three with wins coming from
Solano Caffarena at No. 5 and
Nick Beamish at No. 6. Following a 6-1 loss in the first set, Caffarena stormed back to take the second set 7-5. In the final set, Caffarena was in a run-away 6-1.
Beam took his first set 7-5 but fell in the second 6-3. Needing to win the final set to tie the match, Beamish took it easily 6-2 to tie the match at three.
The Match came down to a battle at the top spot as
Angel Diaz and Pelayo Antuna bought tooth and nail to gain an advantage.
Angel Diaz eked out a 7-6(6) win in the first set. Antuna was able to bounce back and win a nail-biter 7-5 in set two. With the match on the line, Diaz was unable to get a third set victory, falling 6-2 as the Trojans won the deciding fourth point of the match.
The Mavericks season ends in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and finish with a 7-11 record on the year.
