ARLINGTON - Head coach
Shereka Wright has announced the hiring of 2020-21 team captain
Jordynn Hernandez as a women's basketball graduate assistant coach.
Â
"We are thrilled to have JoJo join the staff," said Wright. "She understands what it means to be Lady Mav and she will be a great mentor to our players. She will have an opportunity to grow and learn the game under our staff and while getting her Masters."
Hernandez's responsibilities with the program include overseeing video and team managers, maintaining recruiting database, assisting in scouting, recruiting mailouts, social media and on-campus recruiting and working on multiple office administration tasks.
"I am excited and beyond grateful for this opportunity to start this new chapter of my life here at UTA," Hernandez said. "I'm glad I was able to play for Coach Reke and now have the chance to learn under her and the coaching staff. Coach Reke is one of the best in the game, and her mentality is like no other. I look up to her not only as a head coach, but as a woman and as a mother. She has surrounded herself with such an equipped staff, it is truly a blessing to be in this position."
Hernandez, a native of McKinney, is no stranger to the UT Arlington women's basketball program having spent the last two seasons as a student-athlete for the Lady Mavericks. A transfer from Collin College, Hernandez sat out the entire 2019-20 season due to injury and played in 13 games, making 12 starts, in 2020-21 before a knee injury ended her season. Last season for the Lady Mavs, Hernandez averaged 8.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.9 steals, while shooting 80.6 percent from the charity stripe.
Â
Hernandez was selected to participate in the 2021 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) "So You Want To Be A Coach" program. During the WBCA's one-day online workshop (March 30), she was able to learn about the administrative side of coaching, recruiting, how to get hired, skill development, the importance of knowing the rules, and how to balance work and life.
