GLOBE LIFE FIELD – A four-run lead slipped away from the UT Arlington baseball team (22-23) on Tuesday night as Texas A&M defeated the Mavericks 8-4 at Globe Life Field.
Five pitchers threw in the game.
Zach Norris (ND) picked up his second start of the season and was the lone Maverick to not allow a run. The sophomore tossed five shutout innings, while striking out six batters and allowing just one hit.
Cade Winquest was the first Maverick to come on in relief, allowing three runs in one inning.
Brayden Brooks (L, 0-1) gave up another three runs in 0.2 innings pitched.
Wyatt Divis (1.1 IP) and
Riley Bost (1.0 IP) rounded out the game, each allowing one run.
The Mavericks finished with seven hits on the day, led by
Andrew Miller going 3-for-4 at the plate. Miller was responsible for knocking in all four Mavericks runs.
Boone Montgomery also finished with a multi-hit performance.
The Mavericks started the game off hot, putting runners on the corners was a walk and single. Miller wasted no time, taking a 1-0 pitch to the wall in right center to drive in both base runners.
UTA had a chance to extend their lead in the second, loading the bases with just one out. The Mavericks were unable to plate any more runs, however, ending the inning with a strikeout and groundout to strand the three runners.
Miller came to the plate in the 5
th inning with runners on the corners again and came through once more. With the defense shifting for the double play, Miller found the gap in the right side of the infield to push home Montgomery. The Aggies took their time fielding the ball, which allowed
Connor Aube to reach home from first base and put the Mavericks up 4-0.
The wheels began to unravel in the 5th inning. Two singles and a catcher's interference loaded the bases for the Aggies. Bryan Sturges pinch hit, connecting on a ball to deep left field. A leaping
JD Wadleigh saw the ball bounce off his glove as all three Aggie baserunners came around to score.
The Aggies took the lead an inning later, plating three more runs. With runners at first and second, a single to short stop scored one and kept runners at the corners, allowing for a sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run. Another single, this time finding its way through the infield, pushed the third run home to give the Aggies a 6-4 lead.
Texas A&M scored one run in both the 8
th and 9
th inning as insurance runs. A solo home run came in the 8h inning, while a RBI single to right center finished the scoring at 8-4.
