ARLINGTON – When
Greg Young was officially announced as the new UT Arlington men's basketball head coach at 4:44 p.m. on Apr. 5, he made one thing his top priority: getting
David Azore to return to the Mavericks.
Â
On Mar. 18, Azore announced he was putting his name in the transfer portal. At 5:18 p.m. on Apr. 5 – 34 minutes after Young's introduction – Azore declared that he was returning to finish where he started with UTA.
Â
Azore, who graduated in May with a degree in marketing, will begin his pursuit of a Master's degree in the classroom while continuing his pursuit of leading the Mavs to a Sun Belt Conference Championship on the court in 2021-22.
Â
With nearly 1,000 career points in his three-year UTA playing career following a medical redshirt season as a freshman in 2017-18, Azore is in position to potentially become just the 14th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 points and 500 rebounds for a career.
Â
All of that despite playing in only 12 games last season due to an already-shortened COVID year and then suffering a leg injury which forced the Houston native to miss 13 contests. He still averaged 12.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists over those dozen contests, and registered the No. 1 Play on SportsCenter for a game-winning four-point sequence at the buzzer on Feb. 26 against Arkansas State.
