STILLWATER, Okla. – The UT Arlington cross country teams competed against some of the top programs in the country as both sides finished 13th on Saturday morning at the Cowboy Jamboree at the OSU Cross Country Course.
The men finished with 385 points while finishing ahead of the likes of Oklahoma and Kansas City in the 8k. Meanwhile, the women finished with 372 points in the 6k and were also ahead of OU on the day. In total, six nationally-ranked teams competed in the event.
"It was an eye-opener, to say the least," said
John Sauerhage. "We have a young team, and you take some valuable lessons in competitions like this. We will take what we've learned today, and it will help us next time as we progress this season."
The men opened things up as freshman
Jackson Cichon put together a great race among the elite to lead the Mavs with a time of 25:48.8. Sophomore
Patrick Estes was close behind with a time of 26:13.5 in 93rd, while junior
Marquentin Barnes was 103rd with a time of 26:24.7.
Rounding out the scorers on the morning was freshman
Alfredo Corona with a time of 26:31.3 and sophomore
Tyler Rodriguez with a time of 27:01.5.
Senior
Valeria Diaz-Gonzales was terrific on the women's side as she led UTA with a new PR of 23:30.2 in the 6k and a 63rd place finish. Senior
Madeleine Rowe was next with a time of 23:44.6 in 73rd, while junior
Mathilde Ruud was 82nd with a time of 23:56.4.
Rounding out the scoring on the women's side was freshman
Claire Compher with a time of 24:39.5 followed by freshman
Anne Arntsen with a time of 32:44.4.
The Mavs will take a week off and return to action on Saturday, October 2, with another huge national event as they will compete in the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark.
