SAN ANTONIO – The UT Arlington men's golf team wrapped up the 2021 Lone Star Invitational from the challenging Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio on Tuesday with a final-round 308 to finish in 6th place.
Â
Paul Gonzalez slept on a share of the overnight lead at -2, but unfortunately fell back on Tuesday. He still led the Mavs with a T-18 finish;
Hiroki Miya was close behind with a T-22 showing.
Â
Scoring was the hardest of the tournament on Tuesday as the 74-player field averaged a 77 – up from the 76.71 and 76.54 averages in Monday's opening two rounds on the par-72, 7,435-yard Oaks Course, which plays host to the PGA TOUR's Valero Texas Open.
Â
UTA was no exception to that increase as the Mavs posted their worst round of the tournament but were still able to hold on to a 6th-place showing with a 907 (+43) total. UTSA won the 13-team event with an 868 (+4) total – 12 shots clear of runner-up New Mexico State (880, +16).

INSIDE THE SCORES
- Gonzalez's day started inauspiciously with a double bogey on his first hole, the 4th, and followed up with a bogey on the 5th. He would be unable to make a birdie all round, but still carded 12 pars.
Â
- Miya began his round on the 5th, and his adventurous scorecard featured every number from 2-7. In total, Miya made seven pars, three birdies, one eagle, five bogeys and two double bogeys. The eagle impressively came on the par-5, 602-yard 2nd hole – one of just two eagles made all week on that hole. Miya then followed the '3' up with a '2' on the par-3 3rd to get his card all the way back to 2-over after being as much as 5-over, but unfortunately closed with a double on the par-4 4th.
Â
- Steinarrson couldn't get much momentum going, either, as he was also set back by a pair of doubles. His lone birdie of the day came on the short par-4 17th.
Â
- Hicks did not have anything on his card worse than a bogey, but also didn't have anything below par as he finished with 13 pars and a handful of bogeys.
Â
- Cronje had the most consistent day of all the Mavs as he also made 13 pars, had nothing higher than a '5' on his card and made a birdie on the 17th.
Â
- Menacho started on hole 18 and sat at +3 before rolling in a birdie on the par-4 6th. He made another birdie on the par-5 14th, but those were offset by a double on the 9th.
THIS AND THAT
Gonzalez led the field in par-3 scoring at 2.75 (-3), while Miya tied for 7th at 3.00 … Miya was responsible for one of just eight eagles made all week by the entire field … Menacho and Gonzalez both carded 10 birdies, tied for the 7th-most in the field … Hicks registered 37 pars (3rd most in the field), while Cronje recorded 36 to tie for the 4th most … Menacho tied for 8th in the field in par-5 scoring at 4.83 (-2) … every single UTA player either made a bogey or a double bogey on the par-4, 481-yard 4th, which played by far the hardest of any hole on Tuesday at +0.66 over par … the 2020 Lone Star Invitational was canceled due to COVID-19, but the last time it was contested in 2019 UTA was declared co-champions along with Houston and South Alabama.
Â

UTA continues its stretch of playing four-straight weeks to open the 2021-22 season when the Mavs head to Colorado's Mark Simpson Invitational outside Boulder next Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 27-28.
