ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington Mavericks (0-6) dropped a pair of matches to end the UTA Classic on Saturday, losing to Sam Houston, 3-2 (25-22, 14-25, 28-25, 25-22, 12-15) and North Texas, 3-1 (19-25, 21-25, 27-25, 19-25).
Two Mavericks were named to the UTA Classic All-Tournament Team –
Brooke Townsend and
Alli Wells. Townsend finished with 34 kills in 12 sets (2.83 k/s) and led UTA with 37 total points (3.08 pts/s). Wells averaged 6.62 digs per set from her libero position, totaling 86 over the 13 sets played.
MATCH ONE RECAP | SAM HOUSTON 3, UTA 2
The Mavericks were led offensively by
Brooke Townsend (18 kills) and
Brianna Ford (12 kills). Ford finished with 15 digs to come away with her first double-double of the season.
Jessica Stancliff paced the match with 41 assists. She finished with her third double-double of the season coming away with 12 digs.
Alli Wells led the Mavs with 28 digs, while
Emily Larson also finished with double-digit digs in her first action of the season. The Mavericks came away with 14 total blocks, led by
Kortney Puckett's seven.
Devon Martinka (5),
Monica LaFleur (5) and
Jessica Stancliff (4) each made an impact at the net as well.
SET 1 | UTA 25, SHSU 22 | UTA LEADS 1-0
The teams battled to begin the set, with the set stuck at a standstill at ten-all.
Brooke Townsend jump started a 6-2 run to give the Mavericks a four-point lead. Sam Houston used a 4-1 run late in the set to tie it at 21. Following a UTA timeout, the Mavericks closed the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-22.
SET 2 | UTA 14, SHSU 25 | MATCH TIED 1-1
Sam Houston jumped out to a 9-4 start before the Mavericks answered with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 10, that would be the closes the Mavs got to overtaking the Bearkats as Sam Houston utilized a 15-4 run to close out the set and tie the match.
SET 3 | UTA 18, SHSU 25 | SHSU LEADS 2-1
Sam Houston led from the beginning in set three, taking a 10-3 lead to begin the set. The Mavs pulled within four following a block from
Monica LaFleur and
Jessica Stancliff. However, Sam Houston answered with an 8-3 run to increase their lead to 19-10. A late push brought the Mavs within four again, but a 4-1 run to end the set gave Sam Houston the win.
SET 4 | UTA 25, SHSU 22 | MATCH TIED 2-2
The Mavericks changed the momentum to start set four, opening with a 10-5 lead capped with a block from
Kortney Puckett and
Jessica Stancliff. Still leading by five with the score 20-15, the Bearkats took a late lead with an 7-1 run, forcing a Maverick timeout. UTA responded, by scoring the final four points and forcing a fifth set.
SET 5 | UTA 12, SHSU 15 | SHSU WINS 3-2
With the set tied at six points, the Bearkats scored back-to-back points to take an 8-6 lead into the media break. Sam Houston increased their lead to three points before the Mavericks responded with a 4-1 run to take an 11-10 lead. With the Mavericks winning 12-11, Sam Houston ended the match with a 4-0 run to take the final set 15-12.
MATCH TWO RECAP | NORTH TEXAS 3, UTA 1
The Mavericks finished with 48 kills in the match, led by
Brianna Ford's 14.
Kainah Williams (8) and
Monica LaFleur (8) each contributed heavily to the offensive attack.
Jessica Stancliff paced the match with 26 assists.
Kaylen Beaty showcased her serving ability, finishing with five aces in the match.
Defensively, the Maverick finished with 76 digs and nine blocks.
Alli Wells led the Mavericks with 28 digs.
Monica LaFleur (4),
Kainah Williams (3) and
Devon Martinka (3) led the Mavericks at the net.
Kylee Kapp finished with her first double-double of the season, ending with 11 assists and 11 digs.
SET 1 | UTA 19, UNT 25 | UNT LEADS 1-0
The Mavericks started out strong, taking an early 10-7 lead. However, the Mean Green would go on a mid-set run, taking 12 of the next 16 points to take a 19-14 lead. The Mavs scored back-to-back points to bring it within three points, but North Texas shut down any momentum, closing out the set on a 6-3 run.
SET 2 | UTA 21, UNT 25| UNT LEADS 2-0
With the Mean Green leading 14-11 midway through the set, the Mavericks used an error from North Texas to jumpstart a 5-0 run, capped with three straight kills from
Brooke Townsend. The Mean Green once again responded, scoring the next nine points to take a 23-16 lead. The Mavs tried to rally, but it was too late with UNT taking two of the final seven points scored.
SET 3 | UTA 27, UNT 25| UNT LEADS 2-1
UTA took and early 9-5 lead with a kill from
Brianna Ford. Although the Mean Green tried to battle back, the Mavericks kept ahold of their lead, winning seven of eight points. The run was kickstarted with a kill from
Devon Martinka. With UTA leading 21-14, UNT rattled off a 12-4 run to tie the set at 25. Ford would put an end to the set, coming away with kills for the final two points.
SET 4 | UTA 19, 25 | UNT WINS 3-1
The Mavericks once again took an early lead over UNT – leading 9-4. The Mean Green used a series of runs to tie the match at 14, before winning four straight points to take a 20-17 lead. UTA was only able to win two of the next seven points as North Texas put away the set and the match.

UTA will take on McNeese State in double header action next Friday, September 10. The first match will be at 10:30 a.m. at the College Park Center with the second taking place at 2:30 p.m.
