DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --- The UT Arlington women's basketball team (2-3) suffered through a tough second quarter in a 72-58 loss to Cincinnati (4-2) inside the Ocean Center on Friday as part of the Daytona Beach Invitational.
With the game tied at 19 through one, the Lady Mavs shot 2-for-15 from the field in the second quarter as the Bearcats jumped out to a 35-25 lead at halftime. UTA chipped away in the second half as a 3-pointer from
Kayla White pulled them within two with 4:34 remaining in the third quarter, but Cincinnati closed the quarter on a 13-4 run and never led by fewer than six the rest of the way.
The trio of
Starr Jacobs, White and
Jireh Washington combined for 51 of the 58 points for UT Arlington. Jacobs led the Lady Mavs with 18 points and 10 rebounds while tying Washington for the game-high in steals with five. White added 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting, and Washington chipped in 16 points and five assists.
Shyia Smith finished second on the team with six rebounds, while
Taleyah Jones swiped three steals.
Cincinnati is now 3-0 all-time against the Lady Mavs, although the previous two matchups came in 1991 and 2005.
UT Arlington will conclude the Daytona Beach Invitational on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. against Toledo, which lost a heartbreaker by one point to Penn State on Friday. It will be the first all-time matchup between the two programs.
