LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – The UT Arlington softball team (3-6) wrapped up New Mexico State's Troy Cox Classic Saturday as the Mavericks went 3-2 over the course of the tournament with victories over New Mexico State, Northern Colorado and Southeastern Louisiana.
The Mavericks' offense produced a total of 48 hits and 26 runs over the three-day tournament as graduate student
KJ Murphy led UTA with a .471 batting average going 8-17 over the five games. Murphy recorded three doubles, one home run and six RBI.
Freshman
Aaliyah White and junior
Jadyn Erickson both hit .455 (5-11) with White collecting two RBI.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Southeastern Louisiana (W, 5-1)
KJ Murphy and
Reagan Hukill both tallied home runs against the Lions making that Hukill's second of the Troy Cox Classic. Along with the home run, third baseman Murphy went 1-2 at the plate with a walk while center fielder Hukill went 1-3 with 2 RBI.
Freshman
Aaliyah White also had 2 RBI to her name courtesy of an RBI-double.
Right-handed pitcher
Jessica Adams had an outstanding outing Saturday as she threw a complete game against the Lions. Across a total of 30 batters, Adams allowed just one run off seven hits with three strike outs.
The Mavericks picked up the 5-1 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, giving Adams her second win of the year.
PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Southeastern Louisiana (W, 5-1)
- The Lions and Mavericks both kicked off their first at-bats with lead off home runs as the Mavericks' came from the bat of Murphy – who tied it up 1-1.
- UTA didn't stop there after four more runs extended their lead 5-1 across the second and third inning coming from an RBI-double from White and a three-run home run from Hukill.
- Freshman Adams went on to retire 29 Lions after the lead-off home run in the first as the Mavs defeated Southeastern Louisiana 5-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Nebraska (L, 2-6)
Despite the loss, Saturday's second game was a hitting marathon for the Mavs as they produced 12 hits against the Huskers. Five Mavericks recorded a multi-hit game as
Jessica Carreon (2-4),
Sophie Wideman (2-4),
Morgan Westbrook (2-2) and
Jadyn Erickson (2-3) had two hits apiece.
Even with 12 hits, UTA struggled to scratch any more runs across after RBIs from Carreon and Murphy.
Senior
Laura Henriksen started on the mound the Mavs and threw 1.1 innings followed by
Jessica Adams – who came in to pitch for 2.0 innings facing seven Huskers.
Morgan Max came in for relief as the lefty went on to throw the remainder of the contest facing 19 batters and allowing 3 runs over 3.2 innings pitched. With the Mavericks' offense unable to produce any more runs, Henriksen received her first loss of the season.
PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Nebraska (L, 2-6)
- Nebraska took and early 3-0 lead over the first two innings before UTA answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to make it a 3-2 game.
- The Huskers went on to plate three more runs off three singles to extend their lead 6-2.
- The Mavericks ended the contest with 12 hits – 4 more than Nebraska – but could not find a way to get any more across ending in a 2-6 loss.
ON DECK
The Mavericks will welcome Baylor to Allan Saxe Field Wednesday (Feb. 23) for their home opener with the first pitch set for 6:00 p.m.
