LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana - The UT Arlington softball team (5-7) split its first day of competition at McNeese's Evangeline Bank and Trust II Invitational Friday as the Mavericks picked up a 5-4 win against Manhattan. Â
Head Coach
Peejay Brun recorded her 100
th career-win at UTA with the 5-4 victory of the Manhattan Jaspers.
The Mavericks' offense produced a total of 17 Friday with senior
Meagan Smith going 4-7 at the plate across both game with an RBI. Sophomore
Morgan Westbrook paced UTA offensively along with Smith as she went 3-7 with 2 RBI.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Memphis (L, 2-3)
Center fielder
Reagan Hukill was responsible for the Mavs' lone RBI against the Tigers as the junior finished 1-3 in the box.
Smith knocked 2 hits out of her 4 plate appearances with a total of 12 put outs on defense.
The Mavericks relied off the arm of right-handed pitcher
Jessica Adams as she went on to throw a complete game against Memphis. Adams allowed just six hits throughout her outing and two earned runs.
The Mavericks battled throughout the seven innings but ultimately came up short, giving Adams her fourth loss of the season.
PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Memphis (L, 2-3)
- Through three scoreless innings on both ends, the Tigers jumped to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning
- Â In UTA's last at-bats, the team managed to scratch two runs off a wild pitch and an RBI-single from the bat of Hukill to cut the deficit down to 3-2.
- From the fourth inning on, freshman Adams was able to quiet the Tiger's bats for the remainder of the contest but the Mavs came up just short of one run taking the 2-3 loss from Memphis.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. Manhattan (W, 5-4)
UTA improved its overall record to 5-7 with Friday's win over Manhattan as the squad put up 11 hits in the game. Four Mavericks came away with a multi-hit game as
Jessica Carreon (2-4),
Meagan Smith (2-3, 1 RBI),
Morgan Westbrook (2-4, 2 RBI) and
Aaliyah White (2-3, 1 RBI) had to hits apiece.
Smith was responsible for the go-ahead run that led UTA to the 5-4 win over the Jaspers as the first baseman launched a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning.
Sophomore
Gracie Bumpurs got the start in the circle for the Mavs as she went on to throw five innings allowing just two runs off two hits. Lefty
Morgan Max came in for Bumpurs to pitch just 0.2 innings facing six Jaspers.
Senior
Laura Henriksen came in for the Mavericks in the bottom of the sixth inning for just one out to get UTA out of the jam unharmed.
Jessica Adams relieved Henriksen as the freshman threw the last inning retiring three-straight which secured Adams' first save of the season with the 5-4 victory.
PLAY BY PLAY: vs. Manhattan (W, 5-4)
- UTA grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the second inning courtesy of two RBI-singles from Aaliyah White and Morgan Westbrook.
- UTA's pitching staff kept the Jaspers off the board up until the fifth inning where Manhattan managed to cut the deficit down to 2.
- The Jaspers kept that same momentum heading into the sixth as the team put up two more to make it a 4-4 ball game.
- Smith knocked the go-ahead run with a solo home run to right field that put the Mavs on top that would end with a final score of 5-4.
ON DECK
The Mavericks will resume Evangeline Bank and Trust II Invitational action Saturday with a 10:00 game against the Sam Houston Bearkats.
