UTA Falls To No. 8 TCU Despite Outhitting Horned Frogs

FORT WORTH – Six runs in the first two innings led the No. 8 TCU Horned Frogs (7-1) past the UT Arlington baseball team (2-5) on Tuesday night as the Mavericks fell 8-5 at Lupton Stadium.

Brayden Brooks (L, 0-1) started the game for the Mavericks, but lasted just 1.2 innings. Brooks allowed four earned runs off five hits. Gray Bailey tossed 3.0 innings, allowing one run off two hits and struck out two batters. Tanner King relieved Bailey in the fifth inning, tossing 2.1 shutout innings.  Connery Peters (1.0 IP) threw the final inning for the Mavericks.

UTA finished with nine hits in the game, one more than the Horned Frogs The Mavs were ed by Oscar Ponce's 2-for-3 day at the plate.  Wilson Galvan drove in two runs for the Mavericks, while Jaden Brown, Steven Saunders and Ponce each had one RBI.

The Maverick bats came out hot, picking up three hits in the first four batters, loading the bases for Galvan.  The redshirt sophomore delivered with a line drive in the five hole to drive in two runs and give the Mavericks an early 2-0 lead.

The Horned Frogs answered back in the bottom frame, using a Brayden Taylor two-run home run to tie the game before a sac fly from Tommy Sacco gave TCU the 3-2 lead.

Taylor dealt more damage in the third inning, delivering a two-run single to left field to extend the Horned Frogs. A dropped fly ball kept the inning alive for TCU before a wild pitch scored the sixth run of the game.

Following two shutout innings from Bailey, the Horned Frogs struck again in the fifth inning. A leadoff single from Taylor gave TCU a baserunner before a stolen base and wild pitch put him on third base. A single from Sacco scored Taylor and made it 7-2.

The Mavericks threatened in the seventh inning, loading the bases with two singles and a hit batter.  With the bases jacked, Jaden Brown took a four-pitch walk to push the third run of the day for UTA across home plate.

TCU added an insurance run in the eighth inning, using an errant pic koff throw to first base to make the score 8-3.

Steven Saunders cut into the deficit in the ninth inning with a solo home run – the second of the season. The Mavericks loaded the bases for the second time of the game four batters later. With one out, a swinging bunt from Ponce causes a Horned Frog error and allowed a run to score for the Mavericks. A well-time pitching change was enough to force the final two outs and end the game.
