Softball Drops Both Games in Conference Opener

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team (6-10) dropped both games to South Alabama at Allan Saxe Field Saturday in UTA's Sun Belt Conference opener.

The Mavericks struggled on both sides of the game with a total of six errors in game one versus the Jaguars as South Alabama's Olivia Lackie recorded a five-inning no-hitter.  

However, UTA bounced back in game two of the day with three runs off eight hits. Unfortunately, three runs were not enough as South Alabama went on to defeat UTA, 9-3.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. South Alabama (L, 0-8) 5 Innings
The Mavs committed six errors in game one as the Jaguars knocked 10 hits. Across 14 at-bats, UTA failed to produce a single hit giving Lackie a no-hitter.

Freshman Jessica Adams allowed just three earned runs after several Maverick errors. Adams struck out two batters with four walks and 10 hits. With Uta unable to
record a hit, the right-hander ultimately got the loss – her sixth of the season.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. South Alabama (L, 0-8) 5 Innings
  • The Jaguars took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as a Maverick error allowed South Alabama's Caroline Nichols to score.
  • South Alabama went on to score seven more runs throughout the remainder of the contest with only three of those runs being earned.
  • The Mavs recorded four three-up three-down innings at the plate out of the five innings played. With UTA unable to produce a hit, it took the 8-0 run-rule loss to South Alabama.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs. South Alabama (L, 3-9)
UTA's offense picked it up in the second game against South Alabama as the Mavs matched the Jags with eight hits.

Junior Jadyn Erickson (2-4) and catcher Morgan Rios (2-3) led the Mavericks with two hits apiece as Rios also recorded 1 RBI.

Senior Meagan Smith and junior Reagan Hukill were responsible for UTA's other two runs of the contest.

Sophomore Gracie Bumpurs earned the start on the mound for the Mavs as she went on to throw 6.0 innings with two strikeouts and eight earned runs.

Lefty Morgan Max came in for Bumpurs as the freshman faced just five Jags. The Mavericks dropped game two of the afternoon giving Bumpurs her third loss of the season.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs. South Alabama South Alabama (L, 3-9)
  • South Alabama packed on six runs in their first at-bats after three hits, including two home runs, got things started.
  • The Mavs answered back with three runs across the first three innings with RBIs from Morgan Rios, Meagan Smith (HR) and Reagan Hukill.
  • After four quiet innings, South Alabama went on to plate three more courtesy runs in the sixth and seventh inning.
  • UTA went three-up three-down at the plate in its last at-bats as the Jags picked up the 9-3 victory.
ON DECK
UTA will wrap up its first Sun Belt Conference series with South Alabama Sunday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
