SAN ANTONIO – It was an afternoon to forget for the UT Arlington baseball team (5-10), losing to Incarnate Word 15-2 on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field in San Antonio.
Cade Citelli (L, 0-1) started on the bump for the Mavericks, allowing four runs in three innings while striking out five batters.
Tanner King (3.0 IP),
Connery Peters (1.0 IP), and
Sam Collins (1.0 IP) tossed the final innings of relief, allowing 11 runs off 14 hits. The Mavericks finished with five errors defensively.
UTA finished with just six hits in the game.
Sam Crowell and
Tyler Rice led the Mavericks with two hits each.
Nick Pierce and
Boone Montgomery knocked in the two runs for the Mavericks.
The Cardinals picked up where they left off from the day before, scoring two runs in the first frame with a two-run home run to take the early lead over UTA.
UIW plated another in the second inning, connecting on a two-out solo home run that hit off the scoreboard in right field to extend the lead to three runs.
The Cardinals used another two-out rally in the third inning to plate another run. An errant pickoff attempt allowed a runner at second base to advance to third before a single in the five gap made the score 4-0.
With runners on second and third in the fifth inning, the Cardinals used a sacrifice fly and RBI double to right center to push in two more runs.
The Mavs threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two singles and a hit batter.
Nick Pierce took a pitch to the leg to score the first run of the game before
Boone Montgomery hit into a fielder's choice to push across the second run of the inning.
A mistake-filled seventh scored four runs for the Cardinals. Two errors allowed two runs to score, before UIW connected on a two-run home run to make the score 10-2.
The onslaught continued in the eighth as the Cardinals piled on five more runs off five hits and one error to take the double-digit advantage.

The Mavericks will return to Clay Gould Ballpark to host Abilene Christian on Tuesday (March 15) at 6:30 p.m.
