ARLINGTON, Texas - A pair of multi-run innings led the Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-7) past the UTA Mavericks (3-6) on Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark for an 8-2 home loss.
Â
David Moffat (L, 0-3) began the afternoon's proceedings for the Mavericks, working 5.1 innings finishing with four strikeouts and no walks while giving up four earned on 10 hits.
Cade Citelli threw 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on two hits.
Cade Winquest finished the game for UTA tossing 0.2 innings sacrificing one earned run on three hits.
Â
Moffat was efficient through two, retiring six of the seven batters he faced in 17 pitches. In the third inning Nebraska mounted a two-out, three-run rally with the top of their order with three singles, a stolen base and a triple to give them an early 3-0 lead.
Â
Cornhuskers starting pitcher Dawson McCarville was stellar through five innings, allowing only three hits and an error while holding the Mavs scoreless. His offense added another run in the fifth with a bases-loaded groundout pushing the advantage to 4-0.
Â
In the sixth, UT Arlington began putting runs on the board after a
David VanVooren single and a
Zach Henry walk set the table for a
Steven Saunders RBI single and an
Oscar Ponce RBI groundout. These runs cut the visitor's advantage to 4-2.
Â
The scoreline held until the ninth when four singles paired with savvy baserunning led to a four-run inning for the Huskers, doubling their lead to 8-2.
Â
UTA have put up a fight in the ninth inning this season but despite putting two runners on the base paths Saturday, the offense failed to mount another miraculous comeback against the Big 10 foe.
Â
The Mavericks finish the weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. facing the Northwestern State Demons at Clay Gould Ballpark.
